The Oakland A's will have an interesting to decision to make Friday when outfielder Yoenis Cespedes comes off the disabled list.

The logical player to come off the roster to make room for Cespedes is another outfielder, Collin Cowgill, who has options left and who already has spent time at Class AAA Sacramento this season.

Cowgill, however, has been batting second for the A's, and he has reached base in 11 of his past 17 plate appearances, including twice Wednesday in Oakland's 4-0 loss to the Minnesota Twins.

Asked about Cowgill as a possible player to be sent out Friday, manager Bob Melvin said, "I don't know, but he would be a hard guy to send down, if that were the case. At this point, he's a guy we're relying on every day, and he's hitting second."

The A's usual No. 2 hitter, Coco Crisp, has picked up the pace since moving to the eighth spot on Tuesday, going a combined 3-for-5 the past two days.

Oakland expects to get starter Brandon McCarthy back on Saturday to start at Kansas City. McCarthy, on the DL with a right shoulder strain, threw a bullpen session Wednesday with no complications.

The A's have dropped a season-high eight games in a row, scoring 12 runs in the process, so getting back Cespedes, the team's cleanup hitter, should be a boost to the offense.
