PLAYERS: Miguel Cabrera
TEAMS: Detroit Tigers
A lot of Detroit Tigers fans keep scratching their heads wondering how this team can be dominating in so many statistical categories yet not thoroughly crushing the competition as a whole. It’s a fair point. The Tigers are 36-27, which is good enough to place them 5.5 games atop the spotty AL Central. 36-27 isn’t exactly a record that makes you want to hide your eyes. After all, if the Tigers continue to win 57% of their games they’ll finish the season at 92-70, which will be more than enough to send them to their 3rd straight playoff appearance. Whatcha got Miguel? However, drop the Tigers as they sit today in the AL East and they’re a 4th place team. The same applies in an NL Central comparison. They’d be 3rd in the AL West. In fact, the only other division they’d be leading besides their own is the NL West as they have the same amount of wins as the D’backs but 2 less losses. A phrase I’ve heard recently comes to mind when considering how Tigers fans perceive the current season: “I want more.” Consider these pitching numbers: As a starting rotation, the Tigers’ 3.46 ERA is 4th best in MLB The rotation has turned in 44 quality starts, 2nd only to the Phillies’ 45 The pitching staff as a whole has struck out 614 batters, far and away the best in the business The staff has surrendered just a .237 batting average against, 3rd best in baseball Their 168 walks allowed is the 7th best mark across baseball How about these offensive stats: Detroit has scored 322 runs, the 4th best mark Their .282 team batting average is easily the highest in baseball (.277 for St. Louis) Their .350 on-base % is 2nd best behind only Boston’s .352 mark No team has more hits than Detroit’s 636 Only 3 teams have taken more than the 230 walks Tigers’ hitters have worked Similarly, only 3 teams have struck out less than the 425 whiffs by the Tigers Here are a few numbers that might explain a thing or two: The collective bullpen ERA of 3.78 is ranked just 14th The team has combined for 19 stolen bases, tied for 3rd worst Detroit ranks 12th in home runs with 68 The Tigers have blown 8 saves Even with a few of these shortcomings it is somewhat hard to believe that the team doesn’t have four or five more wins on the ledger. You can subscribe to a few different theories here: It’s Jim Leyland’s fault, or Tom Brookens’, or Lloyd McClendon’s…, Their record is like Victor Martinez’s batting average. It will rise to the surface. The law of averages will play out. A team can’t dominate statistically like this and still fall short of excellence at the end of the day, The bullpen needs to be shored up, Manufacturing runs on the road would be easier if the Tigers could run just a little bit, or They just don’t have ‘it’, whatever it is. No matter what side of the fence you sit on, it seems pretty clear here on June 12th that the Tigers are on a collision course with the playoffs for the 3rd time in as many seasons. They have the pieces to dominate most categories, and that should be plenty good enough. Will their weak division cost them during the playoffs by way of the stiffer competition that comes along with it? Or will a guy like Miguel Cabrera have that one magical postseason that carries this team to its first championship in 30 years? I have a hunch. What’s yours? Jose Valverde, No Team Wants a Closer Who Blows Saves

Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander did what he always does. Verlander has a 15-2 record with a 2.56 ERA in 25 starts against the Kansas City Royals and he dominated again, with seven shutout innings, giving up just three singles and not permitting a runner past first. He struck out eight and walked two, while throwing 117 pitches.“Probably my best start of the season. I’m not...

Living life to the Max

DETROIT Max Scherzer is stern and focused on the mound. Hes all business with a ball in his right hand and a batter sizing him up 60 feet, 6 inches away. And business has been great for Scherzer, whose vastly improved curveball has made him a likely All-Star and possible 20-game winner. In the clubhouse, Scherzer is different. He can usually be found joking with somebody or running...

Don Kelly can't be stopped (lately)

New rule: If Rod Allen says a team can't stop Don Kelly, drink a keg. But Don Kelly really is en fuego. He's hitting 7-for-15 with runners in scoring position (2-for-6 in those situations with two outs), according to Jason Beck. He's 5-for-7 in his last 9 plate appearances with five RBI, including that game winning three-run dinger on Sunday. That's almost quite...

The Evolution of Max Scherzer

Remember 2009? The Tigers were in first almost the entirety of the 2009 campaign, until the epic collapse in the month of September that led to a Tigers faultier and  Carlos Gomez crossing the plate in extra innings as the Twins took the central. In that offseason Dave Dombrowski made a trade that left some Tigers fans scratching their heads and wondering what the future of the...

Tigers fan rocks tiger outfit, matching tiger puppet at Tigers game (video)

A fan who clearly has a near-animistic affinity for the Detroit Tigers made the bold decision to go all-out with his get-up when he attended took in his team taking on the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium on Wednesday. As you can see, this feline-favoring fan rocked a killer outfit, fully regaled in tiger [...]The post Tigers fan rocks tiger outfit, matching tiger puppet at...

Valverde loses lead for Verlander, KC tops Tigers

Justin Verlander did his part, shutting down the Kansas City Royals. Once he left, the Detroit Tigers ran into trouble. Jose Valverde gave up a tying, two-run homer to Lorenzo Cain with two outs in the ninth inning, then Eric Hosmer hit a winning single in the 10th that lifted the Royals over Detroit 3-2 Wednesday. ''No closer wants a blown save,'' Valverde said...

Time for Tigers to stop kidding themselves about Jose Valverde

A quick glance at the MLB standings might lead you to believe that everything is fine with the Detroit Tigers. As of June 13, Detroit has a 4.5-game lead over the Cleveland Indians, the largest first-place margin in the American League and second-largest in the majors. The Tigers also have the best run differential in the league, scoring 81 runs more than they've allowed....

Royals celebrate walk-off win against Tigers in a weird way (GIF)

The Tigers bullpen combined to take a seven inning shut out start by Justin Verlander Wednesday afternoon and flush it down the toilet.  But they didn’t just choose your garden variety mostly-clean toilet at someone’s place of residence.  Instead, they found the nastiest public toilet on the face of the planet. Tigers “closer” (and I only use that term because they do)...

Scherzer still undefeated as Tigers edge Royals, 3-2

Max Scherzer has always had incredible talent, but now he's using it to achieve things even Justin Verlander hasn't accomplished. By holding the Kansas City Royals to two runs on three hits while walking two and striking out six in seven innings, Scherzer led the Detroit Tigers to a 3-2 victory and snapped the Royals' six-game winning streak. Both of Scherzer's...

Miguel Cabrera continues to dominate at the plate

MINNEAPOLIS -- Ever a student of the game, Twins left-hander Scott Diamond remembers the first time he faced Miguel Cabrera. It was back on Aug. 26, 2011. Diamond was making the second major league start of his young career against Cabrera and the Detroit Tigers. In the top of the second inning, Cabrera picked up a hit that snuck through the hole between shortstop and third base....

Preview: It's Shields vs. Verlander in series finale

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Justin Verlander has not been very sharp of late, but he's still putting the Detroit Tigers in position to win. The right-hander tries for a fifth straight winning start by continuing his success against the host Kansas City Royals on Wednesday. Verlander (8-4, 3.71 ERA) has won four in a row despite giving up 32 hits and posting a 4.85 ERA. He has...

What You Knew and Didn’t Know About the Tigers and Astros

Part of this is the easy part. The Tigers are good and the Astros are bad, and that much you knew. That much you’ve known for weeks, or months, or years I guess depending on things. The Tigers lost on Wednesday, but they lost because of Jose Valverde and James Shields, and they still have a comfortable lead in the American League Central. I’m writing this before there’s a Wednesday...

Royals 3, Tigers 2(10)

Lorenzo Cain hit a tying, two-run homer off Jose Valverde with two outs in the ninth inning and Eric Hosmer had a winning single in the 10th, helping the Kansas City Royals overcome Justin Verlander's seven scoreless innings Wednesday in a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers. Verlander did not allow a batter past first base, giving up three singles, striking out eight and walking...

Tigers-Twins Preview

Rick Porcello has played a part in the Detroit Tigers' streak of solid starts but his next opponent has given him some trouble recently. Porcello will try to earn his first win over the Minnesota Twins in nearly two years in Friday night's opener of a three-game series. Detroit's starters have allowed three runs or fewer in 18 of the last 19 games with Porcello (3-3...
