The Justin Upton trade rumors haven’t tapered off and one has to wonder why the Diamondbacks would trade a budding young superstar? Upton doesn’t turn 25 until August 25th. He is a two-time All-Star, coming off a 31 homer, 88 RBI season and seemed poised to take a titanic leap in 2012. However, at the All-Star break Upton was hitting .273 with just seven homers and 37 RBIs.

Ken Rosenthal answers why the Dbacks would trade Upton over at Fox Sports:

Why is this team considering a trade of right fielder Justin Upton? The answers, rival executives say, are fairly simple. Team officials are not convinced that Upton is a winning player. And the D-Backs could benefit if they turn Upton into two or three future pieces.

In a radio interview last month on XTRA 910 AM, Arizona Diamondbacks managing general partner, Ken Kendrick, called Justin Upton an “enigma,” and said it was time for him “to be a consistent performer.”

When Kevin Towers took over as GM of the Diamondbacks he shopped Upton, but couldn’t get the haul he was looking for. Could he get it now as the July 31st trade deadline approaches? There are several teams that could emerge as trade partners, chief among them are the Atlanta Braves, Detroit Tigers, Pittsburgh Pirates, Texas Rangers and Toronto Blue Jays. The cost to acquire Upton would be substantial. The Diamondbacks will want major league ready players and probably a club’s top two prospects.

Justin Upton does have a limited no-trade clause that is said to consist of a handful of big market teams including the New York Yankees and possibly the Detroit Tigers. The list of teams changes from year-to-year. Upton is under contract through the 2015 season and is owed $41.9 million on that deal.

When asked what he knew about the trade rumors Upton told reporters, ”I don’t know anything.” I haven’t been keeping up with it. I’m here to play baseball for the Arizona Diamondbacks, as of now.”

It would seem to be in the best interest of Justin Upton and the Arizona Diamondbacks if a trade could be consummated.
