The Dodgers have been very vocal about their search for a left-handed reliever this summer. So I am wondering why did I saw a tweet by Dylan Hernandez that the Dodgers aren't interested in Brian Fuentes. No, not a trade, that I could understand. Fuentes is a free agent after being released by the Oakland A's earlier today. Here's the kicker, Fuentes would only have to be signed for the pro-rated league minimum to obtain his services. No risk. Well a couple hundred thousand dollars, but that's certainly a smart gamble, right?

You would certainly think so. Any trade the Dodgers may be hoping to make is going to cost prospects and require the franchise to take on payroll. I understand the Dodgers thinking here, obviously Scott Elbert hasn't dominated left-handed hitters the way they had hoped he would. Elbert has allowed a disappointing .286/.349/.429 batting line in 63 plate appearances for the Dodgers in 2012. He has also been tagged with three homers, owning a 2.73 ERA heading into the second half.

Other free agent options Will Ohman, J.C. Romero, and former Dodger Hong-Chih Kuo, don't seem like a better option right now. Not gonna lie, I would still rather give any one of these four a shot, rather than  trading away prospects. Remember the George Sherrill trade? Aye, that one still makes my head esssplode every time I think about it. Sheesh!

The trade market figures to be plentiful, of course, that's going cost at least one prospect, probably two. Why not give Fuentes a shot? Sure he's struggling, but he was on the A's for cryin' out loud. A change of scenery to Dodgertown, while joining a contender may just be what Fuentes needs to turn it around. It doesn't make sense to pay money and prospects for a similar guy we can get for almost free. Am I missing something here?
