PLAYERS: Mike Napoli
TEAMS: Boston Red Sox
Lately we've joked (I say “we” but what I mean is “I”) about Mike Napoli’s health issues. If you found it in poor taste or perhaps lacking the proper amount of humor then you probably have the personality of a whiffle-ball bat. Nonetheless today we found out exactly why Napoli failed his physical which led the Red Sox to restructure his 3-year deal. The reason is - are you ready for this? Napoli suffers from avascular necrosis.  If you're like me you asked this question: What in the hell avascular necrosis? So I did what any good Millennial would I looked it up on Wikipedia and here’s what the digital encyclopedia said: A disease where there is cellar death (necrosis) of bone components due to interruption of the blood supply. Without blood, the bone tissue dies and the bone collapses. If avascular necrosis involves the bones of a joint, it often leads to destruction of the joint articular surfaces. First, that description just sounds painful. Second, it’s fairly...

Report: Mike Napoli’s Contract Details Include Bonuses Based on Plate Appearances, Active Roster Days

When news first broke at the winter meetings that Mike Napoli had reportedly agreed to a deal with the Red Sox, it looked as if the veteran slugger was in line to receive $39 million over three years. After a hip issue was detected during his physical, though, the 31-year-old was forced to settle for a one-year contract. The Red Sox officially announced on Tuesday that they have...

Red Sox Make Napoli Deal Official

Back on December 3, 2012, the Boston Red Sox and Mike Napoli had agreed to a three-year deal worth $39 million. 45 days later it was reported that he and the Red Sox had reached a one year deal. Five days after those reports, the deal has become official. Here's the release from the Red Sox: BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today signed first baseman Mike Napoli to...

Your Morning Dump...where we hope the Year-After Effect doesn't affect Doubront

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. Tom Verducci, the excellent baseball writer for Sports Illustrated, has his annual story on the Year-After Effect out today. Verducci lists those young (25 and under) pitchers whose innings increased by 30...

Evaluating the starters: Catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia

Entering this season the Red Sox need to get the production out of Jarrod Saltalamacchia that they expected to get when choosing him as Jason Variteks replacement. In 2012 Saltalamacchia played in 121 games compiling 405 at bats with only a .222 batting average. Saltalamacchia began last season putting up numbers that were debatable for a selection to the All Star Game but slumped...

A quick look at the Red Sox starting rotation

I'm a man of my word and as promised here's a quick preview of the 2013 Red Sox starting rotation. Keep in mind this isn't an in depth Jeremy Schaap-esque report (that guy can pull a story), but rather a glancing look at what was, what is and what might be in store for the Red Sox starting rotation. Enjoy Red Sox Nation, enjoy. Jon Lester (2012 Record: 9-14) ...

Farrell: Daniel Bard's arm slot and power are back

Daniel Bard was a mess last year -- no need to rehash it. So what will happen this year for the former future closer and now complete question mark? John Farrell and pitching coach Juan Nieves swung through Mississippi on their tour of Red Sox players in the south and had encouraging things to say, according to the Globe. "He looked very good," said Farrell, who along...

Red Sox Rumors: Boston Eyeing Pirates’ Garrett Jones?

With the Boston Red Sox in the market for a left-handed option at first base and in the outfield, Tom Singer of MLB.com wonders if the club would be interested in Pittsburgh Pirates slugger Garrett Jones. With #RedSox still shopping for a lefty-hitting 1B-OF -- ring any bells? -- you have to wonder if #Pirates will make another run at Iglesias — Tom Singer (@Tom_Singer)...

Vote: Which Red Sox Player Will Have the Biggest Bounce-Back Year in 2013?

While the Red Sox are looking to bounce back after a 2012 season filled with turmoil, several players are also looking to get back to form this year. John Lackey added to the Red Sox’ pitching woes last season without throwing a single pitch. Lackey, in his third season in Boston, missed all of 2012 after undergoing Tommy John surgery. Many players have pitched well following...

The Red Sox need to sign Kyle Lohse and Michael Bourn

The Red Sox have been busy this off-season, but you wouldn’t know it. Boston has quietly signed a number of complimentary players to round out their depleted roster. Last season the Sox unloaded Adrian Gonzalez, Carl “Mr. DL” Crawford and Josh “PBR” Beckett sending the trio to the L.A. Dodgers (thanks Magic they’re all yours now) freeing up a significant amount of...

40 Man Roster Review: Craig Breslow

With Spring Training less than a month away, the Red Sox 40 Man Roster should be fairly set until the end of camp. I'll take this opportunity to review the entire roster. Lets face it, there's not much else going on. The 2012 Red Sox fell so far, so fast it is difficult to remember that at the July 31 Trade Deadline that the Red Sox were still on the periphery of contention...

40 Man Roster Review: Daniel Bard

With Spring Training less than a month away, the Red Sox 40 Man Roster should be fairly set until the end of camp. I'll take this opportunity to review the entire roster. Lets face it, there's not much else going on. "Whatever the Red Sox get from Daniel Bard is a bonus." "If Daniel Bard can figure it out, it will be like the best mid-season trade the...

Fire Up The Grill In Piitsburgh!

Joel Hanrahan is not walking through that bullpen door, Pirates fans. Well, he probably won’t be. It is a strange and funny world sometimes, so I guess no guarantees. At least for now and, most likely, the foreseeable future Joel Hanrahan will not be walking through that bullpen door. Nope, Hanrahan rode the gravy train on over to Beantown to come outta the ’pen for the...

Jarrod Saltalamacchia Says He Hasn’t Had Any Conversations This Offseason About Playing First Base in 2013

Now that the Red Sox have officially signed Mike Napoli, he figures to be the club’s starting first baseman on Opening Day. The Sox still need a backup, though, and that could become an even important role given the uncertain future surrounding Napoli’s health. One player currently on the Red Sox who apparently hasn’t had any conversations regarding playing first base is catcher...

Diane O’Meara, Woman in Manti Te’o Fake Girlfriend Photo, Breaks Silence Amid ‘Confusing Situation’ (Video)

Manti Te’o might have thought he had fallen in love with a woman named “Lennay Kekua.” But the face he allegedly came to know as his girlfriend’s instead belongs to Diane O’Meara. O’Meara, whose photo was used as the face of “Kekua,” spoke out Tuesday for the first time since Deadspin broke the news of the Te’o hoax on Jan. 16. She said that the photos were used...
