Picking a favorite for the Rookie of the Year Award is always complicated when the two best candidates are a pitcher and a position player. The two candidates that rise above all other National League rookies are Wade Miley of the Diamondbacks and that Harper kid from the Nationals that you may have heard about. Harper, of course, has gotten all the attention and his every move is documented. And rightly so. He just turned nineteen and has all the tools and desire to be a star in the league for years to come. Plus, his team has made the playoffs after a 31 year absence. All of those things make Harper attractive and he has to be the favorite with sports writers due to familiarity and...well...hubris. But there is a stronger candidate from this observation post who has not been the toast of the town and his team is not in the playoffs--Wade Miley. Again, it's a bit difficult to pick between apples and oranges. WAR tries to bridge that argument. But though it is a good startin...

Cahill trade has worked out well for both sides
PHOENIX -- The Diamondbacks' offseason trade with Oakland involving principals Trevor Cahill and Jarrod Parker was generally perceived as a trade for proven performance and away from projectable potential.
Both teams made the right move.
The D-backs got the Cahill they expected.
Oakland got the Parker they believed in.
Cahill was the big winner Saturday night. He takes the...
Can Wade Miley hold off Bryce Harper for the NL Rookie of the Year Award?
One month ago, LHP Wade Miley looked to be the clear frontrunner for the 2012 National League Rookie of the Year Award. But a slump for Miley in September, combined with a great month for Bryce Harper, have made the race much closer. Let's start with a look at the overall stats for each player.

End of Season Post-Mortem: Arizona Diamondbacks
My pick for the most erratic, uninspired, confusing team of the 2012 season is the Arizona Diamondbacks. They returned nearly their entire 2011 NL West champions team, with the additions of Jason Kubel and Trevor Cahill, along with a full season of Aaron Hill at second base. And what happened? Arizona never showed any spark whatsoever this year, and dragged their way to an inexplicable...
Arizona's Gibson: 'We'll watch, we'll learn and we'll reload'
The Arizona Diamondbacks were eliminated from the NL wild-card chase Friday, almost before they had any say in the matter. Down six games with six to play, it was almost an impossible task to begin with. St. Louis eliminated Arizona with a 12-2 victory over Washington, scoring nine runs in the first two innings to take all the suspense out of it two time zones to the east. The...
Cahill dominates, Diamondbacks rout Cubs
PHOENIX (AP) -- Trevor Cahill threw a four-hitter in his third career complete game, Justin Upton drove in three runs and the Arizona Diamondbacks added to Chicago's futility in the NL West with an 8-2 victory over the Cubs on Saturday night.
Cahill (13-12), 4-1 in his final five starts of the season, struck out a season-high nine and walked three. He was two outs shy of his...
D-backs reflect, look forward after elimination
PHOENIX The Diamondbacks were playing two teams Friday, the Cardinals and the Cubs, and only the Cardinals refused to cooperate. By the time the D-backs took the field, they were eight runs down.
Two time zones east, St. Louis removed what little suspense remained from the final week of the regular season by scoring nine runs in the first two innings against Washington, using...

D-backs see Eaton's debut as 'huge success'
PHOENIX -- Adam Eatons season was cut short because of a broken right hand, but it lasted long enough to encourage the Diamondbacks. It is not a stretch to think Eaton played well enough to force the D-backs into an offseason trade to thin the currently overloaded outfield corps and potentially contend for the starting spot in center field in 2013.
Id say, overall, a huge success...
Diamondbacks 8, Cubs 3
Justin Upton and Cody Ransom homered to power the Arizona Diamondbacks past the slumping Chicago Cubs 8-3 on Friday night.
The Diamondbacks snapped a two-game losing streak but still were eliminated from the NL wild card midway through the game when the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Washington Nationals 12-2.
Arizona starter Ian Kennedy (15-11) was uncharacteristically wild, walking...

Rockies-Diamondbacks Preview
For most of the season, Arizona's Wade Miley has made a convincing case for NL Rookie of the Year honors, but he's had a rough stretch in September.
Miley looks to close the season on a high note Monday night when the Diamondbacks open a three-game home series against the Colorado Rockies.
It's been an impressive season for Miley (16-11, 3.32 ERA), who gets one more...
