Milwaukee Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy was one of the pleasant surprises of this MLB season.  Through 43 games, he had hit five home runs, knocked in 30 runs and sitting at a clip of .345/.387/.583.  He was well on his way to setting career highs in each of those categories.  That was until he suffered an accident at home and broke his hand.

The accident, as the story goes, happened when he was reaching under the bed for a sock and a suitcase his wife Sarah was moving fell on his hand.  Lucroy was placed on the disabled list on May 28 and is expected to be out four to six weeks.

Per MLB.com, Lucroy told a radio station in Milwaukee that while this has been tough on him because he was a key contributor to the Brewers who sit six games below .500.  But more so, it has been tough because Lucroy’s wife has been receiving hate mail.

“My wife has been getting hate mail on her Facebook, like, messages and stuff. It’s really sad that these kinds of things happen from a freak thing. I mean, she didn’t do it on purpose. It was an accident. Stranger things have happened.  It’s been a battle for me, personally, because there’s no one to blame, and my wife is getting killed by this. It’s not like she’s not hurt enough already, not feeling guilty enough already. I really wish people would just leave her alone, leave us alone, just let us try to move forward, and get this behind us, because this has been a brutal couple of days.”

It’s a wonder how the story got out in the first place.  I’d assume that it was Jonathan, Sarah and maybe a dog or cat in the room when the suitcase fell.  How about you make up some story that he dropped the suitcase.  Maybe he was hanging from the ceiling fan and fell. Maybe they were doing who knows what and…shoot, I don’t know.  Anything but, “my wife did it”.

Think Lucroy, think!
