Mike Leake (AP Photo/Chris Carlson)Tom Verducci released his annual Red Flag List of young pitchers who are at higher risk for either injury or decreased performance for the upcoming season. His list is developed from the premise that inning workloads for young arms should be increased gradually from one season to the next. Pitchers whose workloads are increased by too much in a season over the previous year are more likely to suffer from injury or have a setback in their performance the following year. The parameters for Verducci’s list are fairly simple. The pitcher must be 25 years of age or younger, have thrown over 30 more innings than the previous year, and be pitching at the major league level. Minor league and post-season innings thrown are included in a player’s total innings. Mike Leake, 23 last year, came in 11th on Verducci’s 2012 list of 14 MLB pitchers by throwing 36 2/3 more innings in 2011 than the previous year. Most teams have employed some sor...

Are the Reds' Offseason Moves Enough?

Is the additon of Ryan Madson, among others, enough to dub the Reds' division favorites? Dan Syzmborski wrote a very intriguing column recently implying that the Reds still need to make another big offseason move to be considered the "true division favorites" (it's an ESPN Insider piece, so if you want to view it in its entirety you must subscribe). Nonetheless...

Catching Up on MINOR Details: Dayton

If one were to pick which minor league team of the Reds had the best 2011, it would have to be the Single-A affiliate Dayton Dragons. Under manager Delino DeShields (and I love that he's their manager and I don't know why), they finished 83-57, good enough to finish first and win their third division title, and advanced to the quarterfinals of the playoffs. They could...

Catching Up on MINOR Details: Bakersfield

Many of the Reds minor league teams are welcoming new names to their organizations at the managerial level, as evidenced with David Bell and Jim Riggleman taking over in Louisville and Pensacola, respectively. However, the Bakersfield Blaze may have the most anticipated player joining their roster in 2012, as 2011 Reds Minor League Player of the Year and speedster, Billy Hamilton...

Catching up on MINOR Details: Billings

Last but not least (with apologies to the AZL Reds) we have the Rookie League Billings Mustangs. They finished 44-32 for the best record overall in the Pioneer League North, but missed out on the playoffs by just one game, because they did not have the best record in either half of the season. They did take it all the way to the last day though. The big news for Billings is that...

ESPN Releases Sunday Night Baseball Schedule

Yesterday ESPN released their Sunday Night Baseball telecast schedule for the first half of the season. The Cincinnati Reds will host a mid-July contest at Great American Ballpark to give fans that rare Sunday game under the lights. It seems as a whole ESPN tried to buck the typical ways of throwing the Yankees, Red Sox, or Cubs on every Sunday Night. This schedule features good...

K-Rod avoids arby, gets Madson money

By now, we probably shouldn't be surprised when it comes to news about Francisco Rodriguez. The trade bringing him to Milwaukee was unexpected. Very few people expected him to accept the Brewers' offer of arbitration at the end of the season. And now, perhaps most shocking of all, K-Rod is avoiding arbitration by signing a one-year deal for $8 million. Considering many arbitration...
