Will Middlebrooks is officially off of the disabled list and back in the Red Sox lineup. Middlebrooks was activated from the DL and will make the start for the Red Sox tonight against the Tampa Bay Rays. Middlebrooks’ was placed on the DL in late May after suffering a lower back strain against the Cleveland Indians.

There was indications that the Sox could allow Middlebrooks to remain in the minors for a while after his activation, especially with Jose Iglesias playing well in the third baseman’s absence, but Middlebrooks hit well during his rehab stint with Pawtucket- going 5 of 17 with two homers, six RBIs and a 1.094 OPS in five games.
In a corresponding move, Pedro Ciriaco was designated for assignment. If Ciriaco clears waivers or is claimed by another team, that opens up a 40-man spot for the Red Sox to work with.

(Photo: John E. Sokolowski, USA TODAY Sports) BOSTON-- According to a tweet from Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, Boston Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks is back from his rehab assignment with the Pawtucket Red Sox, while multi-purpose utility man Pedro Ciriaco has been designated for assignment. Cafardo tweeted this regarding the move earlier today. Pedro Ciriaco...
It seems Jose Iglesias will be getting his shot as a utility infielder. Iglesias stepped up into the role in the absence of injured Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks, and made a sound case for why he should get to stick with the big league club.
Iglesias’ success seems to be a blessing and a curse for manager John Farrell, who benefits from Iglesias’ strong play but also...
Well, Jose Iglesias did not "ride the pine" very long. Manager John Farrell has re-inserted the defensive (and now offensive) whiz in the Red Sox lineup. Iglesias will hit ninth and play third base—one day after the return of Will Middlebrooks. Mike Napoli returns to first base after taking Monday off, and David Ross will spell the red-hot Jarrod Saltalamacchia behind...
2:45 p.m.: Will Middlebrooks is back, and the odd man out, as has been speculated, is Pedro Ciriaco.
Ciriaco had his shining moments last season on a team that had little else to offer, but he hasn’t been anything but an average fill-in on the big league roster this year. With Jose Iglesias playing some truly inspired baseball in Middlebrooks’ absence, it only made sense to keep...
A fan proposing at a baseball game isn’t usually news. When it comes at an opponent’s ballpark? Well, that’s a little more interesting.
Some love-struck Boston fan popped the question during a Red Sox game on Monday, but it wasn’t at Friendly Fenway Park that he did so. Instead it was at Tropicana Field, in front of a half-full dome of people probably a little surprised that...
David Ortiz had three RBIs and Dustin Pedroia added two RBIs to back up a strong start from Boston Red Sox starter Clay Buchholz in a 7-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday night at historic Fenway Park. The win gave the Red Sox a split of the day/night doubleheader.

There were certainly some notable family ties for the Red Sox when it came to this year’s MLB draft.
John Farrell’s youngest son, Luke, was drafted in the sixth round on Friday. On Saturday, Carl Yastrzemski’s grandson, Mike, got his call in the 14th round (429th overall).
This is actually the second time that Mike Yastrzemski has been drafted. He was selected by the Red Sox...
The Boston Red Sox usually have had heated games as tempers would flare during a matchup against the New York Yankees. Now it seems that another of their AL East rivals are getting under Boston’s skin. That team is the Tampa Bay Rays.
Last night the first inning alone saw eight runs, two by the Rays and six by the Red Sox. Boston’s starting pitcher John Lackey started hearing...
