The Red Sox’ lineup is nearly back to full strength.
Shane Victorino is back after a day off on Sunday and Will Middlebrooks has returned after a stint on the 15-day disabled list. The only piece missing is Mike Napoli, who has a day off after finding himself in a slump for the past week. In the past six games, Napoli is 3-for-21 without an extra-base hit.
Mike Carp, who has heated back up after a down month of May, will take Napoli’s place at first base. Carp is batting .455 in June with a 1.455 OPS. He has hit three home runs and driven in seven runs in just six starts.

Shane Victorino was activated from the Red Sox’ 15-day disabled list just in time for the encore performance in a day-night doubleheader against the Angels. The only other changes from the Sox’ day...
Shane Victorino is healthy and ready to return.
The Red Sox activated Victorino from the 15-day disabled list before the second game of Saturday’s day-night doubleheader. In a corresponding roster move, Jackie Bradley Jr. was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket.
Victorino returns after missing 17 games with a hamstring injury. He’s been banged up a bit this season, as he’s also...
It looks like the three-person infield merry-go-round is intact for the Red Sox. After starting at third yesterday (and logging two hits), Jose Iglesias is benched today in favor of Will Middlebrooks. The Red Sox have intimated that Iglesias will get at least two starts a week in this three-way 'platoon'. Daniel Nava starts in right.
(Photo: John E. Sokolowski, USA TODAY Sports) BOSTON-- According to a tweet from Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, Boston Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks is back from his rehab assignment with the Pawtucket Red Sox, while multi-purpose utility man Pedro Ciriaco has been designated for assignment. Participating in the Home Run Derby is often a risky endeavor. It’s all about thrilling the fans, but there have been multiple instances of players struggling after taking part in the midsummer long ball contest.
That’s one of the reasons Mike Napoli, who has launched a few mammoth home runs this season, is a bit skeptical of participating in the competition if he is eventually...
The Boston Red Sox travel to Tropicana field for the second time this season with more-or-less the team that came into the season. Shane Victorino, Will Middlebrooks, and Stephen Drew are all healthy and hitting pretty well, while John Lackey is putting the injury scares behind him.
Boston has only lost once to the Rays in six games so far this year, and have not lost a series yet...
Shane Victorino went 1-for-5 in his return to the lineup on Saturday night, but the veteran outfielder is out of the lineup on Sunday afternoon.
Jacoby Ellsbury is back leading off and starting in center after having a night off. Ellsbury went 1-for-4 in the matinee portion of the day-night doubleheader on Saturday.

Al Messerschmidt/Getty ImagesBoth Will Middlebrooks and Stephen Drew have over 100 more at-bats than Jose Iglesias. Despite that edge in playing time, Drew has exactly six more hits (41) and Middlebrooks one more (36) than Iglesias (35). If you want to add some fancy-schmanzy sabermetrics into the equation, Iglesias has a WAR of 1.7—exactly the same as Drew and far superior to...
The Jose Iglesias-Will Middlebrooks-Stephen Drew conundrum will be a prominent storyline following the Red Sox over the next few weeks.
Middlebrooks, in his first game back from a rehab stint in Pawtucket, got the start at third base Monday night in Tampa Bay, and he and Drew both struggled at the plate in Boston’s 14-inning win. The two infielders combined to go 2-for-13 with...
2:45 p.m.: Will Middlebrooks is back, and the odd man out, as has been speculated, is Pedro Ciriaco.
Ciriaco had his shining moments last season on a team that had little else to offer, but he hasn’t been anything but an average fill-in on the big league roster this year. With Jose Iglesias playing some truly inspired baseball in Middlebrooks’ absence, it only made sense to keep...
11:28 a.m.: The lineup cards have been posted, and Shane Victorino will get the day off Sunday.
Victorino, who was activated off the 15-day disabled list before the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader, really had to push his hamstring in the first inning of the win. Jonny Gomes drilled a double off the left-center field wall, and Victorino motored all the way around from first...
