TRENTON, N.J. – Outfielder Mason Williams, named by Baseball America as the team’s top prospect, received an early birthday present Wednesday night.
Williams, who will turn 22 Aug. 21, received a surprise promotion to Double-A Trenton.
The original plan was to have Williams finish the season at Class-A Advanced Tampa, but injuries to outfield prospects Slade Heathcott (patellar tendinitis) and Tyler Austin (wrist) accelerated his timetable.
So now Williams, who made his Double-A debut in a 6-5 Thunder loss to Harrisburg Thursday night, is in the middle of an Eastern League playoff race, with Trenton holding a 5 ½ game wild-card lead with 19 games left in the season. The Thunder (65-58) open an important 6-game road trip to New Hampshire and New Britain tonight.
“I’m excited to be here and be in a playoff race,’’ said Williams, who pinch-ran and scored in Thursday’s game, in addition to striking out in the ninth inning.
