Mets fans don't have much to cheer about these days—unless you count the fact that Lucas Duda MIGHT someday be a league average hitter...—particularly after team owner Fred Wilpon had this choice quote for the fans of his moribund franchise:

"[The fans] shouldn't be concerned about us owning the franchise, because we intend to own the franchise for a very long time," Wilpon said, "Whether they're happy about that right now or not, I don't know."

Well, I do know they're not happy about it. The best part is that Wilpon is touting how the Mets have sold 7 of their $20M minority shares, which might be impressive if not for the fact that the Wilpon family purchased two of them and another 4 were bought by Sportsnet NY, the team-owned television network.

But! The Wilpons know how motivate players. On Monday, COO Jeff Wilpon went around to each of the players at spring training handing out t-shirts with the "U" logo of the cartoon character Underdog on them. Classy!

And the move worked right away...in pissing off the last remaining (healthy) star on the Mets, David Wright.

"I don't really like using the whole underdog thing. I don't really like playing that card," Wright said. "I think it’s just a way to remind everybody in here that the outside expectations aren’t the expectations that we have for ourselves.

"But we in here kind of have to rally around that and get it going," Wright continued. "I guess, at the end of the day, that is kind of an underdog theme, but we shouldn't view ourselves as that."
