With the New New York Mets getting ready for the second installment of the 2012 Subway Series, Mets reliever Frank Francisco ruffled some feathers when he told Kevan Kernan of the New York Post that the cross-town rival Yankees were “chickens:”

“I can’t wait to face those chickens. I want to strike out the side against them. I’ve done it before.”

In game one, the Mets closer got a chance to back up his smack talk. And while he didn’t strike out the side, he did close out the Yanks with a scoreless ninth en route to his 18th save of the season: With the Mets clinging to a two-run lead, Francisco entered the game in the top of the ninth and needed just three pitches to retire the innings first batter, Russell Martin. As he does so often, Francisco gave Mets fans a bit of scare walking Raul Ibanez on six-pitches before serving up a single to Yankee captian Derek Jeter; placing the tying runs on base. “I told myself after the base hit that I have to go right after the next two guys,” Francisco told reporters after the game. And go after them he did, blowing three pitches right by Curtis Granderson — including a sick slider for strike two and a 95 MPH fastball that caught Granderson looking for the second out — before inducing Mark Teixerra to pop out to short to end the game. Following the game, the 32-year-old closer spoke with reporters about his “chicken” comments, saying: “I want to go out there every day. I know you guys are asking me because what happened.  I didn’t mean to hurt anybody’s feelings.  …I made simple comments. And, I think a lot of guys took it the wrong way.  But, I put everything in Jesus hand and I asked him not let me get embarrassed out there.  And he was out there with me.”

Francisco has now converted each of his last four save opportunists and since May 17th is 9 of 10 in save chances with an ERA of 1.26:
