Pirates’ players and friends in winter league play:

VENEZUELAN LEAGUE

Tiburones de La Guaira  4,  Caribes de Anzoategui  3

Los Tiburones had a 4-0 lead going in to the bottom of the 5th, after a solo homer in the 3rd and 3 more runs on 5 singles in the 4th.  Los Caribes scratched out one run in the 5th, on a single, a stolen base, and a wild pitch.  They rallied again in the 6th, beginning with a lead-off double by CF Gorkys Hernandez.  Hernandez tagged up and advanced to third on a fly out, then scored on an RBI single.  A walk and a fielding error brought in a second run in that inning, but that was as far as Los Caribes could get.  They loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the 9th, with Hernandez due to bat.  A pinch-hitter was substituted for Hernandez, though, and a grounder force out ended the game.

Tigres de Aragua  5,  Bravos de Margarita  1

LF Lastings Milledge doubled twice, scored once, and drove in a run for Los Tigres.

The Mexican Pacific League had no games scheduled.

The Dominican League begins play on Friday — roster info coming soon.

Why Aren’t the Pirates Keeping Paul Maholm?

It seems that every year there is a big story in the off-season that always leads to the same result.  The Pittsburgh Pirates make a move, the move is unfavorable to the fan base, and the immediate reaction is to speculate on what this means for the remainder of the off-season.  Usually the thought is “the Pirates will do nothing, and will go in to the following season with...

How Free Agent Compensation Works

There have been a lot of questions in the past few days about free agent compensation and offering arbitration to pending free agents.  The process isn’t one we’ve had to cover in Pittsburgh for quite some time.  That’s mostly because the Pirates haven’t seen many ranked free agents in recent years.  Most of the candidates have been traded away prior to...

What are the Pirates trying to do in 2012?

For a long time, it was easy to know what the Pirates' strategy should be for every off-season: don't sign old guys that will block young guys, try to find bargains to plug the remaining holes, and don't worry about the next season's win total because 1.) the fans were already worn down and apathetic from so many years of losing and probably wouldn't get worse...
