A few Pirates’ players and friends in winter league action:
Aguilas Cibaenas 5, Toros del Este 2
Starter Aaron Thompson, who pitched for both Altoona and Indianapolis in 2011, made his Dominican League debut tonight, joining manager Dean Treanor’s Toros. Thompson got off to a good start, allowing just one single over the first two innings. He gave up two unearned runs in the 2nd, on a throwing error at third base, and an inside-the-park home run by Aguilas’ Hector Luna. Thompson gave up a walk and a single in the 4th, but got out of the jam with a double play. He gave up two singles in the 5th, though picked one of the runners off base. Thompson was relieved with one out and one on. That runner came around to score another unearned run on a stolen base and a throwing error by his catcher. Los Toros posted their two runs in the top of the 6th, when the first three batters of the inning singled, singled, and doubled. But Los Aguilas got the two runs right b...

Should the Pirates buy out Ronny Cedeno's option?
MLB Trade Rumors has been releasing their 2012 Free Agent and Trade Market reviews, and looked at the shortstop position in their most recent update. Among the updates, they listed Ronny Cedeno as a guy who could have his option declined by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Two weeks ago I looked at the shortstop options on the market...
A week from today, Maholm will most likely be a free agent.
The Texas Rangers took a 3-2 lead in the World Series last night, and could potentially win it all on Wednesday. If they lose, that means the series will be decided on Thursday. For the Pittsburgh Pirates, and the other 27 teams that are waiting for the off-season to begin, this means that we will start to see the first...
Born on this date in 1935 was longtime Pirates pitcher Bob Veale, who played for the team from 1962-72. Veale was signed as a free agent out of college in 1958 and the Pirates sent him to the California League where he struggled with his command, walking 55 batters in 63 innings. He was just as wild his second season but much more effective lowering his ERA by almost two runs from...
Unfortunately, the final record for the Pittsburgh Pirates did not accurately reflect the progress they made this season. They played meaningful games after the all-star break for the first time since 1997. Pitching was cited as the main reason for the Pirates success, but good pitching does not happen without good fielding.
When you look at the recent history of the...

The Mesa Solar Sox lost 8-7 to Scottsdale after a walk off homer from Bryce Harper off of Pittsburgh Pirates prospect Jeff Inman. Inman, pitching in his second game in three days, came on to get the save for Mesa in the bottom of the ninth, up 7-5. He gave up a lead off single to Mike Trout, then gave up a one out single two batters later, bringing Harper to the plate as the...
Just a little bit of winter league action for Pirates’ players and friends today… the Dominican League had a scheduled day off.
Caribes de Anzoategui 3, Bravos de Margarita 1
Not a lot of offense in this game — just 2 hits for Los Bravos and 6 hits for Los Caribes. Los Bravos scored their only run in the top of the 5th, on a walk and three errors by...
A few notes as the World Series wraps up…
Out in Arizona, Robbie Grossman is still destroying the ball and Gerrit Cole had a much better second outing. Don’t forget to check their progress on the AFL Tracker page, which is updated daily.
There were a few mini-rumors over the past couple days loosely connecting the Pirates Edwin Jackson and Francisco Cervelli. I wouldn’t put...
When I was writing up my prospect lists last week, I noticed that I was writing a variation of one thing over and over again: "This guy has good control for his level," or "For his age, his control is very advanced." That's what makes Nick Kingham such an interesting prospect despite not pitching in a full season yet. That's what makes Jameson Taillon...
I hope you've all been watching the World Series. It doesn't happen much when it comes to baseball, but I'm almost completely speechless right now. And besides a World Series with the Pirates in it, I can't imagine that baseball could make me much happier than it has in these last three weeks.
