After the Caribbean leagues took their usual Sunday off, they’re back in action, with a few Pirates’ players and friends:

DOMINICAN LEAGUE

Leones del Escogido  3,  Gigantes del Cibao  2

Starling Marte started this game in center field for Los Leones.  Los Gigantes scored two runs, both coming in on RBI singles up the middle, which Marte handled.  Marte made the third out of the inning on a fly ball.  Then, after one out in the bottom of the inning, Marte’s spot in the batting order came up — and he was replaced by a pinch hitter.   Not sure what was going on, and no more info available at this point.  Escogido scored a run in the bottom of the 4th, and took the lead with 2 more runs in the 6th.  Andy Marte pinch hit for Escogido in the bottom of the 7th, and walked.  Another walk, the third of the inning, loaded the bases with Leones.  Former Pirate farmhand Juan Perez came on in relief for Los Gigantes, and he ended the inning with a ground out, leaving the bases loaded.

Toros del Este  5,  Tigres del Licey  3

Los Tigres got things started with a 3-run 2nd inning, on a triple and four singles.  Los Toros returned fire in the bottom of the 3rd.  A single, a walk, and a single brought in one run.  3B Matt Hague lined a single into left field, driving in the second run of the inning.  A double brought in the tying run.  Los Toros broke the tie in the bottom of the 8th.  Two walks off former Indy Indian (2002-04) Roberto Giron, plus a ground out put two Toros runners into scoring position.  A single lined into center field drove both runners in to give Los Toros the lead and the win.  Hague went 1-for-3 with a walk.

VENEZUELAN LEAGUE

Caribes de Anzoategui  1,  Bravos de Margarita  0

Los Caribes scored the only run of the game in the 2nd inning, on a double and a walk, then a passed ball and an RBI ground out.  Gorkys Hernandez entered the game in the bottom of the 8th for Los Caribes, to play center field.  He did not get a plate appearance.  Former Pirate farmhand Ronald Bellisario pitched a perfect top of the 9th for Margarita.

Internal Options For the 2012 Season

Following the announcements yesterday that the Pittsburgh Pirates had turned down all four player options, Pirates fans began to panic.  The panic was the same thing we see at the beginning of every off-season: the worry that the Pirates wouldn’t add anyone over the next five months, and would enter the 2012 season with the options available in the system. It’s far too...

Pirates Outright Aaron Thompson to AAA

Along with the moves that were announced earlier today, the Pittsburgh Pirates have also outrighted left handed pitcher Aaron Thompson to AAA Indianapolis.  This is the second time Thompson has been outrighted off of the 40-man roster, which means he can elect to be a free agent, rather than accepting the assignment.  The move opens a 6th spot on the 40-man roster.  The 40-man...

Why the Beginning of the Pirates' Off-Season Bugs Me

In lab, whenever someone is having an indordinate amount of trouble with an experiment, it's only a matter of time before someone says, "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." Usually it's said with an air of futility, because everyone goes through spells in their graduate career where they feel like...

This Date in Pirates History: November 2

We covered Gary Redus yesterday, today just happens to be the birthday of the man he platooned with in Pittsburgh for a time. Born on this date in 1966 was Orlando Merced, first baseman/outfielder for the Pirates from 1990-96. Merced was signed as an amateur free agent by the Pirates in 1985 and he struggled his first two seasons before missing most of the 1987 season, getting into...

Pirates’ Cedeno, Walker Named Gold Glove Finalists

According to Rob Biertempfel at the Trib, the Pittsburgh Pirates have two Gold Glove finalists from their infield last season: short stop Ronny Cedeno and second baseman Neil Walker. The Gold Glove is arguably one of the biggest jokes of an award in all of professional sports. Advanced statistics are continually ignored and the award is repeatedly given to a player who’s name...

AFL Recap 10/31: Gerrit Cole Makes His Fourth Start

The Mesa Solar Sox won 3-1 today against Phoenix, with the Pittsburgh Pirates pitching prospects combining for six strong innings.  They were led by Gerrit Cole, who made his third start of the season.  Cole pitched three innings, allowing one run on three hits, with a walk and three strikeouts.  The one run came on a home run to lead off the second inning.  Cole was again hitting...

Making the Pirates better: Shortstop

You know what? I'm tired of being negative about this off-season. I still don't think that things are going to play out terribly well for the Pirates this winter, but I also don't think I've done a good job of making it clear that I don't think the Pirates are breaking up the 1927 Yankees again. Ronny Cedeno and Ryan Doumit and Paul Maholm and Garrett Jones (should...

Cedeno, 3 other veterans cut loose by Pirates

The Pirates declined club options Monday on catchers Chris Snyder and Ryan Doumit, shortstop Ronny Cedeno and left-handed starter Paul Maholm, the team announced. The club was not expected to pick up the options on Snyder, Maholm or Doumit, though Cedeno seemed a possibility.

Making the Pirates better: Starting Rotation

You know what? I'm tired of being negative about this off-season. I still don't think that things are going to play out terribly well for the Pirates this winter, but I also don't think I've done a good job of making it clear that I don't think the Pirates are breaking up the 1927 Yankees again. Set your DVRs

If you want to see Gerrit Cole pitch before spring training, your best bet to do so is probably going to be on Saturday night, as the MLB Network is televising the Arizona Fall League Rising Stars Game, where both Cole and Robbie Grossman will be representing the Pirates. The game starts at 8:10 ET, though I'm not sure when Cole is pitching and I don't expect him to throw...
