Looking for Pirates’ players and friends in Friday’s winter league action:

VENEZUELAN LEAGUE

Bravos de Margarita  13,  Tibureones de La Guaira  6

Anthony Claggett pitched 3.1 innings in relief, allowing one run on 4 hits to earn his first win for Los Bravos.  Margarita’s starter, Indiana native Ryan Tatusko (Nationals) allowed Los Tiburones one run in the 1st inning, then got into trouble again in the 2nd inning, allowing 3 runs on a walk and three singles.  Claggett relieved Tatusko and finished the 2nd inning with a grounder back to the mound.  He went on to retire the side in order in the 3rd, and allowed a lone single in the 4th.  Claggett gave up three consecutive two-out singles in the 5th, surrendering one run.  Los Tiburones scored one more run in the 8th on a solo homer.  Meanwhile, Los Bravos’ batters scored in five consecutive innings, including 3 runs in the 2nd, and 4 runs in the 5th.  They posted 17 hits on their way to 13 runs.

Caribes de Anzoategui  1,  Navegantes del Magallanes  0

This scoreless pitching duel lasted until the bottom of the 10th inning.  With former Pirate Jean Machi on the mound for Los Navegantes, Los Caribes scored the only run of the game on a solo home run.  It was Machi’s second loss for Los Navegantes.   Another former Pirate, SS Argenis Diaz, had a single and a walk for Los Navegantes.  CF Gorkys Hernandez was 0-for-3 for Los Caribes.

Leones del Caracas  3,  Aguilas del Zulia  0

Another game with no scoring until the final inning.  In the top of the 9th, a bases-loaded single drove in one run.  Corey Wimberly came on to pinch-run, and he continued around to third base as a walk and a hit batter forced in two runs.  Diego Moreno pitched one inning of relief for Zulia, allowing one single while striking out three batters in the 8th.  Former Pirate (now with Boston) Justin Thomas made his first appearance for Caracas.  He pitched the bottom of the 7th, and walked another former Pirate C Carlos Maldonado, then retired three more batters for a scoreless inning.

Cardenales de Lara  3,  Tigres de Aragua  0

Los Tigres were held to just 3 hits, with both 1B Hector Gimenez and LF Jonel Pacheco both hitless.  Mike Crotta came on in relief to begin the top of the 8th for Los Cardenales.  He gave up a single and walked Pacheco, then got a strikeout, but was relieved at that point.  Another walk loaded the bases with Tigres, but all three were left on base.  Former Pirate Romulo Sanchez pitched the top of the 9th for Lara, taking the mound with one runner on base.  Sanchez got three quick outs to end the game.  Wil Ledezma came on in relief for Los Tigres in the 7th inning after Lara had scored their final run.  He walked a batter, then got the final out of the inning.  Ledezma also came out to begin the 8th inning, and walked another batter, then got a grounder force out before being removed.

DOMINICAN LEAGUE

Aguilas Cibaenas  2,  Toros del Este  0

Former Pirate Shane Youman  earned his fourth win with 7 scoreless innings of work.  He allowed 3 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 5 Toros.   1B Matt Hague had one of those 3 hits, a single in the 2nd inning, but he was erased in a double play.  Los Aguilas were not faring much better, putting up just 6 hits.  They scored their two runs in the 8th, when a walk and a single and a bunt put two runners into scoring position.  A squeeze bunt brought in the first run, and an RBI single added the second run.

Leones del Escogido  3,  Estrellas de Oriente  1

After four scoreless innings, Los Estrellas cracked the scoreboard with a run on a double and a single.  Los Leones answered with a run in the bottom of the 5th, on a walk, a bunt, and an RBI single.  CF Starling Marte contributed a single in that inning.   A fielding error contributed to another run for Los Leones in the 6th, then another double and a single gave them their third run in the 8th.  Marte was 1-for-5 in the game, while LF Jake Fox went 0-for-4 for Los Estrellas.  Dusty Brown pinch-hit for Los Estrellas in the 7th, but struck out.  He remained in the game behind the plate for the remaining two innings.

PUERTO RICAN LEAGUE

Leones de Ponce  6,  Indios de Mayaguez  1

It was a good night to be a Lion — all three Leones teams got a win.  Los Indios scored first, with a single, a double, and a balk in the top of the 5th.  Los Leones tied the score in the 6th.  SS Benji Gonzalez led off with a walk, moved to second on a bunt, and on to third on a wild pitch.  Three more walks loaded the bases and forced in Gonzalez with the tying run.  Los Leones broke the tie with 5 runs as they batted around in the 7th inning.  Two doubles, three singles, a walk, and two throwing errors contributed to the rally, and Gonzalez added a sacrifice bunt.
