In a light day of Winter League action yesterday, Starling Marte went 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI’s. He started the game with a fly out in the second inning, then a strikeout in the fourth, before reaching on an infield single two innings later. After another fly out in the seventh, Marte came up in the top of the ninth, with the bases loaded and his team holding on to a 4-3 lead. He cleared the bases with a two out double, putting his team up by four. Those runs turned out to be big, as Estrellas came back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, for a 7-5 final score. Felix Pie went 0-for-2 with three walks and a stolen base. He has 21 walks in 31 games and he has been successful in eight of his ten stolen base attempts. Anderson Hernandez went 2-for-4 with a walk and a strikeout. While his hitting hasn’t been great this year, posting a .254/.326/.342 line, he has played well in the field as of late. Yesterday he turned three double plays and he hasn’t made an error in his last nine games. This coming after committing four errors in the previous week. He opened the season with 17 consecutive errorless games as well. Oscar Tejeda played his first game in 12 days. He started at DH and went 0-for-2 with a walk. He is 3-for-11 on the season with a double and two RBI’s. The leagues in Mexico, Puerto Rico, Australia and Venezuela all had off yesterday. All resume play today with the exception of the Australian League, which starts up again on Friday. There has been one player overlooked in the updates prior to today. Sam Kennelly, the 16-year-old shortstop signed out of Australia during this past July 2nd signing period, has been playing in the Australian Baseball League. His stats haven’t been listed on the Pirates Winter League page and unlike all the other Pirates players, he isn’t on the Adelaide Bite. Kennelly is two years younger than any other player on the Perth Heat roster. He plays on a team with three of his older brothers as well. So far this season, he has played six games, going 2-for-12 with two singles and an RBI.
