Found January 16, 2013 on Pirates Prospects:
In playoff action out of the Dominican yesterday, Starling Marte returned to his team and picked up right where he left off. He hit a two-run homer in the ninth, as his team’s rally from an early 5-0 deficit fell just short in a 7-6 loss. Starling Marte homered for the fourth time in his last five games Marte originally left Winter his team back in early December, but returned during the playoffs. This past week, he was back in the states attending a course for rookies in the majors. During his brief four game return before the second departure, Marte homered in three of those games. He went 1-for-5 in last night’s game, driving in another run with a groundout in the seventh inning. Marte has nine RBI’s in his five playoff games. There are just two days left in the round-robin tournament to decide which two teams will meet in the DWL best-of-nine championship series. Marte’s Leones del Escogido team has a 9-7 record so far, second best behind the 10-6 Aguilas and just ahead of the 8-8 Toros. Out of Venezuela last night, Luis Sanz threw two scoreless innings in relief. He allowed a single to the first batter he faced, erasing that runner with a double play, then retired the next four batters in a row, two by strikeouts. Sanz came out for a third inning, walking the first batter he faced, before being pulled. He threw 27 pitches, 16 for strikes. In the U18 National Youth Championships in Australia from today, sixteen-year-old pitcher Nick Hutchings, again saw some time at shortstop. He has struggled in his two pitching appearances, allowing 14 runs(eight earned) over seven innings of work, but he has contributed at the plate and in the field on his off-days. Hutchings came in to play shortstop in the eighth inning and handled his only chance cleanly. He grounded out to first base in his only AB. He is 2-for-4 at the plate, with three RBI’s during the tournament. Sam Kennelly had the day today, resting up for tomorrow’s doubleheader. In the Australian Baseball League, the Adelaide Heat announced their traveling roster for the upcoming four game series in Melbourne. Zac Fuesser will start Thursday night, while Stefan Welch is the only other Pirates player traveling with the team.

An ode to Jeff Karstens

I am a sucker for guys like Jeff Karstens. And there is no rhyme or reason for the fact. It just is. Perhaps it is because he is a former Yankee and it is a personal habit to follow such creatures once they leave the New York nest. But he left a long time ago. Perhaps it is because he was not drafted until the nineteenth round of the 2003 draft. It is not hard to root for guys who...

First Pitch: Projecting 81-84 Wins for the 2013 Pirates Using ZiPS

Today the 2013 Pittsburgh Pirates ZiPS projections were released on FanGraphs. The projections included WAR estimates for every player. It’s difficult to get a season projection out of these results. The playing time for each player isn’t exactly accurate. For example, Clint Barmes, Chase d’Arnaud, Josh Harrison, and Jordy Mercer are all projected for 475+ plate appearances...

First Pitch: Is Jeff Karstens Over-Rated or Under-Rated?

Back at the end of November the Pittsburgh Pirates non-tendered right-handed pitcher Jeff Karstens. The move was pretty controversial at the time. Karstens was projected to make $3.8 M through arbitration and was coming off a pretty good year when he was healthy. The starter posted a 3.97 ERA in 90.2 innings, with a 6.55 K/9, a 1.49 BB/9, and an 0.79 HR/9. The problem was that Karstens...

Reports From Instructs: Pirates Power Arms

Despite having covered the headliner arms of Pirates instructs — Gerrit Cole (covered last week) and Jameson Taillon (looking basically the same as when I covered him midseason) — there were still some interesting high ceiling arms on display. First up is righty Nick Kingham, whom the Pirates signed for an over-slot bonus just under $500,000 in the 4th round of the 2010 draft...

Jeff Karstens, Pirates finalize $2.5M contract

Jeff Karstens is staying with the Pittsburgh Pirates, finalizing a $2.5 million, one-year contract on Thursday. Karstens can earn an additional $1 million in performance bonuses based on innings. The 30-year-old right-hander was 5-4 with a 3.97 ERA in 15 starts and four relief appearances last year, when he missed time because of separate injuries to a hip, groin and shoulder....

Pirates Re-Sign Jeff Karstens to One-Year Deal

After back-to-back solid seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Jeff Karstens will return for another year.  He hit free agency at the end of last season, but the Pirates have agreed to bring him back on a one-year contract. According to Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazzette, the Pirates and Karstens agreed yesterday to a one-year deal.  Since the terms of the contract...

Depth signing: Phillies invite Juan Cruz to camp

The Phillies added some depth to their spring roster by signing veteran right-handed reliever Juan Cruz to a minor-league contract, per Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. Championship. Cruz, 34, had a 2.78 ERA last year but was wild and when he refused to accept a demotion to Triple-A, the Pirates released him. He’s pitched for seven teams in 12 years. He has a 4.05 career ERA, a 1.41...

RHP Cruz signs minor-league contract with Phillies

Right-hander Juan Cruz has signed a minor-league deal with the Philadelphia Phillies that includes an invitation to spring training, CBSSports.com reported. Cruz, 33, spent the 2012 season with Pittsburgh before the Pirates cut him in August. He worked 35 2/3 innings in 43 games as a reliever and posted a 1-2 record with a 2.78 ERA. His 12-year career in the major leagues began...

Pirates Sign Hawpe, Invite Him and Three Others To Spring Training

In what is a pretty clear trend the Pirates have brought on yet another Clint Hurdle guy, this time it’s Brad Hawpe.  You’ll remember before the 2011 season they signed Garrett Atkins and invited him to Spring Training as well.  This is basically the exact same signing, and will likely have the exact same result. [...]
