Found December 20, 2012 on Pirates Prospects:
In Venezuelan League action from last night, Ryan Reid picked up his eighth save in dramatic fashion, He came on in the eighth inning with a 4-3 lead, a man on second base and one out. Reid struck out the next two batters to retire the side, then after his team went down in order in the top of the ninth, Reid came back out to try to close out the game. He struck out the first two batters of the inning, before running into trouble. He gave up three straight two out singles, the second one to Gorkys Hernandez and the last one didn’t make it out of the infield. With the bases loaded, Reid struck out former Pirates second baseman Jose Castillo to end the game. In 19 appearances this VWL season, Reid has a 2.25 ERA, with 22 strikeouts over 20 innings and a 4.14 GO/AO ratio. The 27-year-old righty has never pitched in the majors, but he made great strides last year towards that goal. After spending parts of four seasons in AA for the Rays organization, Reid made 46 appearances at AAA last year, posting a 3.52 ERA, recording 79 strikeouts in 79.1 innings, with a .246 BAA and a 2.60 GO/AO ratio. Reid received a non-roster invite to Spring Training this year. In action in the Dominican from last night, Anderson Hernandez went 1-for-4, with a run scored. His 55 hits ranks tops in the DWL, two ahead of former Pirates catcher Robinzon Diaz and long-time major leaguer Hector Luna. Felix Pie went 2-for-5, with two singles, and Alex Valdez went 1-for-5,with a single. The two players, both signed to minor league deals this off-season, have been batting at the top of the Estrellas de Oriente lineup all season. Pie has reached base 63 times in 41 games, with nine stolen bases in 11 attempts, while Valdez leads all Pirates players with five homers in Winter/Fall ball. In Puerto Rico, Benji Gonzalez went 0-for-4, dropping his average down to .238 after 42 AB’s. Gonzalez had his average up to .300 just days ago and began to see more playing time. He has started five straight games, going 3-for-19 at the plate during that span and all ten of his hits on the year have been singles. The Dominican League is off today. The league wraps up it’s regular season schedule tomorrow night. The playoffs in the Dominican consist of a round-robin tournament between the top four teams, playing each other six times each. The teams with the two best records then meet in a nine game championship series. Just one game separates the third place and sixth(last) place teams in the league, so tomorrow night is a big night for four teams.
