Day One of baseball’s annual Winter Meetings — where GMs sit around smoking cigars while toying with rumor-hungry journalists — is in the books.

If you’re a Giants fan, not a whole lotta action to report on, but still some juicy nuggets, nonetheless. Here’s what I have for you:

  • The morning started with a rumor by Jon Paul Morosi (FOX Sports), who tweeted that the Giants had “reportedly” submitted a bid to the Saibu Lions for Japanese shortstop Hiroyuki Nakajima. (It turned out to be false.)
  • Giants skipper Bruce Bochy told reporters today that — while Nakajima is a “nice player and a good defensive shortstop who can handle the bat” — he could not comment on the rumors that the team had placed a bid for him. He also said today that he is comfortable with Brandon Crawford being the everyday shortstop.
  • Bochy told reporters today that Nate Schierholtz is the Giants’ right fielder as of now. He also confirmed what many had already speculated: Buster Posey will play a lot of first base next season to mitigate any setbacks on his surgically-repaired ankle and leg.
  • Bochy gave a glowing report on catcher Hector Sanchez, who’s “opening eyes” in winter ball. We could see a lot of Sanchez backing up Posey in 2012.
  • Bochy also hinted that Aubrey Huff (who has committed himself to a rather intense off-season conditioning program) could play a lot of left field, with Brandon Belt and Posey manning first base.
  • As discussed here the other day, Freddy Sanchez has begun throwing. Bochy says Brian Wilson will begin throwing by the first of the year.
  • Former Giant Cody Ross wants a three-year contract with whomever signs him. (Good luck with that, Cody.)
  • Morosi reported today that the Giants are no longer pursuing Jerry Hairston Jr. (well, alrighty then).
  • The Veterans Committee voted the late Ron Santos into the Hall of Fame, it was announced today. They also snubbed former A’s owner Charlie Finley. That’s what you get for bringing us the DH, Charley O.
  • Ken Rosenthal (FOX Sports) says that former Giants shortstop Edgar Renteria is drawing some interest from teams looking for a multi-position utility guy. Rosenthal says that Renteria wants to play for a contender. (I double checked, and no, my Tweetdeck is not set for 2010.)
  • Sports Illustrated noted today that the average MLB salary rose 2.7% to $3.1 million.

The scribes will be hanging around the Anatole Hilton hotel lobby in Dallas until Thursday (and the rumors can fly at anytime), so keep checking back, folks.

I hope you enjoyed reading "Winter meetings update: Nakajima, Schierholtz, Crawford, Huff, Posey, Ross, Freddy, B-Weez and more…." I'm interested in your opinion on this article. Why not leave a comment at 22gigantes.com?
