Found November 10, 2012 on Redlegs Review:
by: Chase Fitzgerald Staff Writer The Reds bullpen this season was just flat out nasty. They boasted the best ERA in baseball at 2.65 and also led the league in saves, fewest earned runs, and fewest homeruns allowed, which is just amazing if you consider that they are pitching at GABP most of the time. This was the best bullpen the Reds have had in a long time. Yes, even better than the one they sported in the 1990's... The Nasty Boys II For those of you who don’t know, the Nasty Boys were Rob Dibble, Norm Charlton, and Randy Myers. They may have been the best trio of pitchers any bullpen has ever had and they led the Reds to a World Series title in 1990. They were just incredible. Dibble led them all with a 1.74 ERA but Myers led them with 31 saves and also had a very good ERA at 2.08. Norm Charlton’s ERA was a little higher at 2.74 but he did start 16 games so that definitely affected his ERA negatively. Well, this season the Reds had their own trio of relief pitc...

Reflecting back on the Phillips and Votto extensions

Votto is slated to remain in Cincinnati for the next decade by: Chase Fitzgerald Staff Writer All the talk before the season on how the Reds were going to go on without Joey Votto meant nothing on April 2nd when Joey Votto signed the longest deal in baseball history for 12 years and for the price of 251.5 million dollars to remain a Red for his entire (presumably) career...

Jay Bruce wins Silver Slugger

Jay Bruce prepares to swing and hit a home run to tie the game.Tonight, Reds’ right fielder Jay Bruce was one of three NL outfielders awarded the 2012 Silver Slugger award. Though Bruce can go through some frustratingly long stretches where it seems like he can’t do anything but strike out (he had 155 Ks this year), those are more than overbalanced by the earth-rending tears...

Bray, Valdez choose free agency

At long last, the Reds have washed their hands of The Trade. The last remaining component, Bill Bray, was outrighted yesterday and chose free agency rather than being non-tendered later. As you may recall, Bray was supposed to be the bright spot in a deal that sent right-fielder Austin Kearns and shortstop Felipe Lopez to the Washington Nationals in 2006. In addition to Bray, the...

Jocketty: Reds could trade shortstop this winter

Cincinnati Reds general manager Walt Jocketty has been popular among his peers at this week’s GM meetings in Indian Wells, Calif. He has what many of them need: shortstops. The Reds have two talented shortstops on their 40-man roster: Zack Cozart, 27, and Didi Gregorius, 22. Both are far away from free agency, meaning one could be dealt to fill a more immediate need. In fact, Jocketty...

Reds prospects aid as Javelinas roll to fifth and sixth straight victories

Peoria was a well-oiled machine on Wednesday, routing Phoenix 8-0. The Desert Dogs, the Reds AFL affiliate last year, managed just four hits and committed an error, while this year's version, the Javelinas, banged out nine hits. There was plenty of Reds action in this one, with six of the runs being scored by Reds prospects and overall actually having a hand in all eight runs...

Reds reportedly interested in Michael Bourn

The Reds are interested in acquiring the services of outfielder Michael Bourn, according to this report by CBS Sports. It suggests that Cincinnati isn't considered the favorite to land Bourn - that title belongs to the Washington Nationals - but they are expected to make a solid run at him. The 29-year old free agent boasted an on-base percentage of .348 last season to go...

Reds LH Bray, INF Valdez become free agents

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Reds left-handed reliever Bill Bray and infielder Wilson Valdez have refused outright assignments to the minor leagues, choosing to become free agents. Bray missed most of last season because of injuries, a problem throughout his seven-year career with Cincinnati. He was on the disabled list from April 24 until June 21 with a groin injury, then from July 31 through...

Analyzing all the trades from the past year

Acquiring Latos proved to be fruitful this season by: Chase Fitzgerald Staff Writer Walt Jocketty made quite a few trades this season which is actually pretty unusual. It is very hard to determine who wins trade at first glance so, now that we have a season in the books, let’s find out. Reds get: Sean Marshall Cubs get: Travis Wood, Dave Sappelt, and Ronald ...

Bruce Wins Silver Slugger

There were a lot of expectations heaped on Jay Bruce since the Reds' 2005 first rounder made his debut in 2007. Though he hasn't put together a monster breakout season he's shown gradual improvement each year and is now a Silver Slugger. He's still only 25 yrs old giving fans good reason to believe he will continue climb in the status of an elite MLB outfielder.

Friday news and notes

Sorry about the late post guys. I worked on the book yesterday for about 10 hours and went to bed, completely forgetting about an article for today. I guess the big news of the day is Jocketty mentioning that he would be willing to trade one of Zach Cozart or Didi Gregorius in the right deal. That could open up a whole barrel of options. I think that Cozart likely has a little more...
