World Series on Christmas? Agent Scott Boras proposes interesting MLB schedule

Watching the World Series on Christmas would be pretty cool, but how could this possibly become reality? Well, Scott Boras has an idea.

The well-known sports agent has brainstormed some ideas for how Major League Baseball can play a 162-game schedule in 2020 amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Boras's plan is an optimistic one. He submitted two ideas to the MLB, according to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times. The first is a 162-game season that begins on June 1, and the second proposal is a 144-game season that would begin on July 1. Both of these scenarios would feature a complete playoff schedule that would run from Dec. 3-26. 

“We have it all mapped out,” Boras said, according to DiGiovanna. “It’s workable. We’ve done climate studies, and in Southern California, the average temperature in December is 67 degrees, which is better than late March and early April in most cities. We have 11 stadiums we could play postseason games in. I’m gonna get my neutral-site World Series after all.”

Boras has long been a fan of playing the World Series at a neutral site, similar to the Super Bowl.

He represents some of the MLB's most talented players, including Gerrit Cole, Anthony Rendon, Stephen Strasburg and J.D. Martinez. Many of the players Boras has spoken with are in favor of playing a full schedule — probably because they want to be paid their full salaries in 2020.

Regardless, Boras believes his plan is a better option than most. 

“All the players I’m talking to want to play all the games, and we can map this out,” Boras said. “We’re just trying to let [MLB] know we have the ability to do it, that there’s a logical way to do it. You have the facilities. You have the sites to do it. The difference is how the playoffs are run and where they’re played.

“I think having a planned World Series at a designated site would be a tremendous economic gain for our industry. You could secure corporate sponsorships and have entertainment surrounding it. The Super Bowl has one game. Here, we can have five to seven days of festivities.”

While his plan seems somewhat reasonable, there are some flaws, including the weather affecting teams located in colder cities come October and November, not to mention December.

It doesn't sound like MLB executives will go for Boras's plan anyway. It seems more and more likely that an 81-game season will be played beginning on July 1 with a postseason in October, according to DiGiovanna.

If that's the case, we should expect a rather wild 2020 regular season in terms of competitiveness and records.
