Trot out any 12-year old that has been over-publicized on ESPN during the current Little League and they would make this play. Even little Johnny Reserve who plays the bare minimum. Shoot, a fairly well-mannered golden retriever could have made this play. Miguel Cairo, a utilityman for the Reds, was playing first base Thursday night. In the 11th inning with the score tied, Phillies utilityman (see also professional bunter/defensive replacement) Kevin Frandsen dropped down a sacrifice bunt down the first base line. Cairo, like any Major Leaguer should’ve known, didn’t have a play at second because he was holding the runner on and the bunt wasn’t scalded at him.

Cairo recognized this, which makes this play worse. His sole job was to pick up a slowly-rolling ball with his monster first base glove, take three steps and tag Frandsen. We bring back in the golden retriever who would have known to take the ball back to its owner. As you’ll see, Cairo took a few hard steps at Frandsen and while standing in front of him got preoccupied with something at second base (or the babe down the left field line, or maybe the smell of the roasted almonds at the concession stand), looked away and let Frandsen run by him. Flustered (or hungry), Cairo dropped the ball preventing him from throwing it to Wilson Valdez who was covering first.

Luckily for Cairo, the Philles’ offense is hot garbage and they didn’t score. But, the Phils still pulled it out in 11 innings. Either way, pick up a rolling ball, take two steps and tag a baserunner.

“They” say hitting a baseball is the hardest thing to do in sports, but holding a baseball and touching another guy is right up there for Miguel Cairo.
