The Pirates and Cubs didn’t get under way until 11:42 PM eastern time thanks to a rain delay, but the Bucs actually made it worth the wait with a solid win.

Kevin Correia was remarkable. He pitched probably his best game as a Pirate, completely sailing through the Cubs lineup with no problems at all. He allowed just two hits over seven innings, both singles by Darwin Barney. The Cubs seemed to just be up there hacking and hoping to get the game over with, but Kevin did a great job taking advantage. He also struck out six, and set the tone right away by ringing up the first four Cubs hitters of the night.

The Pirates got three runs off Travis Wood in the third. Clint Barmes was hit by a pitch, Brock Holt singled, Starling Marte hit a triple into the corner, and Jose Tabata doubled off the wall in center. That was an awesome inning, but the Bucs were quiet the rest of the night. In fact, Wood racked up a career high nine K’s. Still, the one crooked number was enough thanks to the big night by Correia.

I don’t really know why Clint Hurdle pulled Kevin after seven innings (he was throwing a 2-hit shutout and was only at 86 pitches), but Jason Grilli had a 1-2-3 eighth and Joel Hanrahan had an easy ninth.

Amazing–and MUCH NEEDED–effort by Correia, as the Bucs salvaged a split and head back to Pittsburgh 2.5 games out of the WC spot. They’ll surely be exhausted (it was ABSURD that this was a scheduled night game on a getaway day with no off days remaining, forcing them to wait out the long rainstorm and play super late–the Bucs probably got into Pittsburgh around the time you woke up this morning) but at least they’re coming home with a win.

Pirates 3, Cubs 0 / Box / 2012 Record: 74-72 / Next: Tuesday, vs. Brewers, 7:05

MVP: Correia (+.257) / LVP: Sanchez (-.068) / Key play: Marte’s triple
