It’s WSBGMs Hall of Fame time. As a reminder, here is how it works. Each year, Carson and I will nominate a few people (players, coaches, ballgirlz, etc.) that have had an impact on the blog. We'll put the nominations up for vote. If the person receives a certain percentage of the vote (which we will arbitrarily change every year to suit our needs), then he/she will be officially enshrined in the Hall of Fame, which will be less of a hall and more of a widget in the sidebar. As for the rules: 1) a person can only be nominated three times 2) a person cannot be currently playing/coaching/working for Phils to be nominated 3) a reader can vote for more than one person but we ask that you only vote once and 4) I reserve the right to make up more rules later. In the inaugural vote, Pat Burrell was elected, Steve Jeltz, Abe Nunez and David Bell remained on the ballot, but Rick Schu only received a few votes so he is no longer eligible. In 2010, Eric Bruntlett was elected. Bea Arthur, Ada...

Hamels deserves big money from Phillies

Virtually all contracts are defensible, even ones that don't turn out so well. Philadelphia Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. had his reasons for awarding a monster extension to first baseman Ryan Howard and massive free-agent deals to left-hander Cliff Lee and closer Jonathan Papelbon. But regardless of how one might assess those deals -- Howard looks like a thumbs...

Poll: Manager You Would Replace Charlie Manuel With

Who would be the best manager for the Phillies if Charlie left? (AP)We will always be grateful for Charlie Manuel leading the Phillies to the 2008 World Series crown. “This is for Philadelphia!  This is for our fans,” screamed Charlie after the Game 5-Part 2 clincher against the Tampa Bay Rays.  Charlie will likely never have to pay for a beer again in the City of Brotherly...

Top Moment #4: Win 102

Charlie Manuel is a big reason the Phillies won 102 gamesIn the last couple of years, the last day of the season was somewhat meaningless. By that time, the Phillies already clinched the division and September callups saw much of the action.2011 was a tad different. The division was already clinched, but the Phillies were playing for something else: history. And as it turned out...

Player Profile #102: Ryan Howard | 1B | PHI

Phillies manager Charlie Manual has pretty much conceded that Ryan Howard will miss the start of the season. Assuming everything goes smoothly with his rehab, a big assumption for a big man recovering from a ruptured Achilles tendon, Howard should be ready by sometime in late April or early May. Once he does get back, we’ll likely see the same thing we’ve come to see...

Juan Pierre, Domonic Brown, and plans

Last week, the Phillies signed Juan Pierre to a minor-league contract. Pierre’s most likely role with the club is as the fifth or sixth outfielder. His primary duty might be to pinch run when Jim Thome reaches base in the late innings. Once Ryan Howard returns from his Achilles injury—projected sometime in May—Pierre may be designated for assignment. What makes this...

Young spent the last several years of his career with his weight fluctuating between 290 and 320. He is down to 232, and intent on playing again at the professional level. Young last played in 2008 with the Washington...

MLB News: Two Former Phillies Outfielders Move into New Stages of the Lives

According to MLB Trade Rumors, Burrell 35, is planning on announcing his retirement. The left fielder spent most of his career with the Phillies before signing with the Tampa Bay Rays after winning the 2008...

Phillies add Chad Qualls to the bullpen

The Phillies made a solid addition to their bullpen today, signing reliever Chad Qualls to a one year, 1.15 million dollar contract. Qualls put up some decent numbers (3.51 ERA, 1.25 WHIP) last season, though he was pitching mostly in the pitcher-friendly confines of San Diego. An 8 year veteran, the Phillies will be his 5th MLB team. He is capable of pitching a lot of innings...

Dmitri Young Worked Out For The Phillies

According to ESPN's Jim Bowden, the Phillies worked out former Nationals' first baseman Dmitri Young. The 38-year old has not played in the majors since 2008, but the Phillies said he showed quick hands and great footwork. He also lost 75 pounds.

Former Philadelphia Phillies Outfielder Pat Burrell to Retire

Pat Burrell will be retiring from the game of baseball, sources said. Burrell, 35, finishes his 14-year major league career with 292 home runs, 976 runs batted in, and two World Series rings – on the 2008 Philadelphia Phillies and 2010 San Francisco Giants. Amazingly, Burrell was 1-for-27 in his World Series career, but still managed to earn two rings. The lone hit was arguably...
