With their 24th round pick in the 2012 MLB First-Year Player draft, the Yankees selected Jose Mesa Jr., a 6-foot-4, 215-pound right handed pitcher out of Charles Flanagan High School in Florida.

This 18-year-old is the son of former Major Leaguer Jose Mesa and is another sign-ability case. From what it sounds like, Mesa expected to go much earlier in the draft and unless the Yankees have something big up their sleeve they likely won’t have the money to keep him from going to college. He has already committed to Seminole Community College.

“It’s about what that money says,” Mesa said. “If you get a big signing bonus, teams treat you differently. They give you better treatment. You can have bad games — a bad year — and still get a shot.”

He’s built just like his dad and even has the same windup as him. He can already get his fastball up to 95 mph and it sounds like he mixes in his slider and changeup well.

With their third round pick (124th overall) in the MLB 2012 first-year player draft, the Yankees took a left handed hitting, 6-foot-0, 200 pound, outfielder out of Bradford High School (Wi.), Nathan Mikolas. Mikolas is another projectable type considered one of the best high school batters in the Midwest. He is said to have good bat speed, quick hands, and good swing mechanics...

Yankees 2012 12th round draft pick: Chris Breen

With their 12th pick (397th overall) of the 2012 MLB amateur draft, the Yankees selected Chris Breen, a 6-foot-3, 215-pound catcher out of Winter Springs High School in Florida. A two sport athlete through most of high school, Breen quit playing football his senior year to focus on baseball and it paid off as he hit .492. He’s an advanced high school hitter in that his coach...

"Remote Chance" Gardner Returns for Subway Series

According to Andrew Marchand, injured outfielder Brett Gardner took five at-bats in an extended spring training game today and Girardi sounded pleased with the results saying "all went well." Marchand went on to say that there is a "remote" possibility that Gardner could return during this weekend's Subway Series vs. the grossly overachieving Mets. Girardi...

Yankees 2012 16th round draft pick: Stefan Lopez

With their 16th round pick in the 2012 First-Year Player draft, the Yankees selected Stefan Lopez, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound, junior out of Southeastern Louisiana University. Lopez, who just celebrated his 21st birthday on Monday, is coming off an amazing junior year after leading the nation in saves. In 29.1 innigs this season, he posted a 0.61 ERA, 42 strikeouts and just five walks...

Yankees' Rivera sets date for surgery

Yankees closer Mariano Rivera said the blood clot in his right calf has cleared up and he will have surgery on his injured knee on Tuesday. Baseball's career saves leader was at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday before New York's game against the Tampa Bay Rays, walking without a limp despite having a torn ACL and damaged meniscus. He says he should be ready to play at the beginning...

Yankees 2012 31st round draft pick: Kevin Johnson

With their 31st round pick in the 2012 MLB First-Year Player draft, the Yankees selected Kevin Johnson, a 6-foot-3, 190-pound right handed pitcher from the University of Illinois. The 21-year-old Johnson was the ace of Illinois staff this season. He had a 3.97 ERA with 43 strikeouts and 27 walks in 88.1 innings. It sounds like Johnson will be a draft and follow type. Meaning...

Chamberlain nearing game action

Joba Chamberlain could soon pitch in a minor league game for the first time since injuring an ankle during spring training. The New York Yankees reliever said he is scheduled to throw in a simulated game on Friday. Chamberlain threw a pair of 20-pitch segments Monday during his third batting practice session at the team's minor league complex. ''Especially after today...

Subway Series preview: Comparing the Mets and Yankees

There has been random polarization and a trend of parity through the first two months of the 2012 season, especially in both Eastern Divisions.  The Orioles have run rough shot on the AL East after two months while the typical bottom-feeders in the NL East have sprinted out of the gate.  I still am holding out on their endurance, however. And low and behold, the frontrunners...

Bottom of the Ninth: New York, New York

New York Yankees: On Friday, Jon Heyman reported that Rafael Soriano will remain the closer, even after David Robertson returns from his oblique injury in a week or two. I was a little harsh in my assessment of Soriano two weeks ago, as his May K/BB was a solid 3.67, vastly superior to his awful 1.17 ratio in April. Soriano is both throwing more strikes and getting more swinging...

Yankees 4, Rays 1

NEW YORK -- Inning by inning, New York Yankees starter Ivan Nova looked less like the pitcher who had been roughed up for most of the season and more like the 16-game winner he was last year. With each new scoreless inning, Nova also made Tampa Bay Rays starter Alex Cobb's own impressive outing look as though it would end in vain, which it did in the Yankees' 4-1 win Wednesday...

Not-So-Rapid Reaction: Rays 7, Yankees 3

Last night’s matchup between CC Sabathia and David Price was billed as a must-see duel, and with good reason. The two lefties are both in the upper echelon of Major League pitchers, and expectations for a sequel to Nova v. Cobb were warranted. It took a half-hour rain delay to finally get going, and once it did, neither ace delivered on the promise of the pregame. Each of them...

Not-So-Rapid Reaction: Yankees 7. Rays 0

It’s a baseball axiom that “real” pitchers learn to adapt to their diminishing stuff and maintain their excellence through mastery of the craft’s fundamentals. Generally, such hurlers tend to see lower strikeout totals, but that goes along with improved control. Basically, they try to become Greg Maddux. Andy Pettitte has come out of retirement this season and turned into...

Rays 7, Yankees 3

NEW YORK -- David Price outpitched fellow ace CC Sabathia and the Tampa Bay Rays' shuffled lineup produced enough offense to top the New York Yankees, 7-3, Thursday night. The victory helped the Rays avoid a sweep and move back into a first-place tie with the Baltimore Orioles in the AL East, a half-game ahead of the Yankees. The loss snapped the Yankees' three-game winning...
