With their 24th round pick in the 2012 MLB First-Year Player draft, the Yankees selected Jose Mesa Jr., a 6-foot-4, 215-pound right handed pitcher out of Charles Flanagan High School in Florida.
This 18-year-old is the son of former Major Leaguer Jose Mesa and is another sign-ability case. From what it sounds like, Mesa expected to go much earlier in the draft and unless the Yankees have something big up their sleeve they likely won’t have the money to keep him from going to college. He has already committed to Seminole Community College.
“It’s about what that money says,” Mesa said. “If you get a big signing bonus, teams treat you differently. They give you better treatment. You can have bad games — a bad year — and still get a shot.”
He’s built just like his dad and even has the same windup as him. He can already get his fastball up to 95 mph and it sounds like he mixes in his slider and changeup well.
