Despite a cloudy injury report, the New York Yankees are having a strong start to the 2024 MLB season. New York is 26-14, which places them second in the AL East. Moreover, Aaron Boone provided optimistic updates on Jasson Dominguez and DJ LeMahieu amid the team’s weekend Tampa Bay Rays series.

LeMahieu hit live off starting pitcher JT Brubakaer on Saturday and will do so again on Tuesday, Boone said, per Gary Phillips. In addition, Jasson Dominguez will start a rehab assignment at Single-A Tampa on Tuesday or Wednesday. Seeing the two Yankees inch closer to a return is a great sign.

DJ LeMahieu suffered a non-displaced right foot fracture after being hit by a foul ball on March 16th. As a result, this delayed his 2024 regular season debut. Once LeMahieu fully recovers, he will provide serviceable depth to the Yankees.

LeMahieu had a solid year of production in 2023. He batted a .243 average, was responsible for 44 RBI, held an OPS of .718, and hit 15 home runs, the last of which was his most since 2019. He will be back in line to crack the lineup as he gains live reps.

Meanwhile, Jasson Dominguez underwent Tommy John surgery in September of 2023, and his recovery is trending in the right direction. He still has plenty of room to improve after spending just one year in the Major League with New York.

Dominguez batted a .258 average, hit four home runs, and amassed seven RBI to go with a .980 OPS. The Yankees will be happy to see the 21-year-old continue his progress once rehab is completed.

New York is preparing to continue their weekend battle against the Rays. The Yankees beat Tampa Bay 2-0 on Friday night and look to continue their momentum into the rest of the weekend. The matchups will be important to New York’s lofty aspirations.

Yankees look to continue strong 2024 season start

The Yankees finished the 2023 season with an 82-80 record. Thus, they missed the MLB Playoffs for the first time since 2016. Nevertheless, their middling year seems to have sparked a newfound motivation. New York looks strong so far in the beginning stages of the 2024 season.

Aaron Boone’s club experienced some hiccups against the Orioles in early May, but the team has been working to stay focused and execute. Boone believes staying consistent is the key to staying afloat amid cold stretches.

“We’ve had some of those nights where we’ve got shut down where we had a lot of traffic but we didn’t get the big hit and they kept us in the ballpark,” Boone said via Chris Kirschner of The Athletic after the Yankees’ 4-2 April 30th loss to the Orioles. “Just got to keep giving ourselves a chance like that and trust we’ll break through. But I thought we put together a lot of good at-bats at the top.”

New York has taken Boone’s words to heart. They continue to give themselves a chance to win in the competitive AL East. They have just one less loss than the division-leading Orioles going into mid-May. With the positive injury report updates, the Yankees look to continue to play sound team ball and rise the standings.
