Rafael Soriano went down with an elbow injury in May that looked like it might need season ending surgery, but it’s still July and he’s back. The Yankees recalled Soriano from the disabled list this afternoon.
Joe Girardi has been unclear up until this point as to whether Soriano will automatically get the 8th inning role back or if David Robertson will keep it for now.
Soriano is taking lefty reliever Steve Garrison‘s spot on the active roster and to make room for him on the 40-man roster the Yankees put Sergio Mitre on the 60-day DL. That essentially means that Mitre is done for the 2011 season.
I’m very interested to see how Soriano pitches. He got lit up a bit while he was rehabbing in the minor leagues and wasn’t exactly great before he got hurt either. When healthy though Soriano can be a shutdown reliever.
