Boston Red Sox 3 — New York Yankees 2 (10 innings)

The rally by the Yankees was not enough as the Red Sox would win by a score of 3-2 in 10 innings.

Hiroki Kuroda pitched a gem of a game in tonight’s rubber game. In 8 innings, Kuroda allowed 7 hits but induced a career-high 4 double plays to make quick work of any jams he was put in. In the 2nd inning, a single that should have been caught in left field by Andruw Jones and a walk began the rally to two runs when Ryan Sweeney came through with a double to left field that also exposed the present day Andruw Jones defensive inabilities. His route on the line drive to left-center was a poor route as the ball got by him and allowed the second run to score. Kuroda had his pitches dipping in the zone enough to produce a total of 11 groundouts in what was an outstanding start to keep the Yankees defense active in the game. Rafael Soriano pitched a perfect 9th to bring the game to extra innings. David Robertson took over for the 10th inning. He led it off with a walk of Jarrod Saltalamacchia and then pulled off a different kind of Houdini act. With rookie Will Middlebrooks attempting to bunt the runner over to 2nd, he hit Middlebrooks and home plate umpire Brian O’Nora, rendering both injured on that 0-1 pitch. Manager Bobby Valentine and pitcher Josh Beckett would end up getting thrown out of the game as they argued that Middlebrooks was hit by the pitch, not attempting to bunt but the call would not be reversed. After a Middlebrooks single and a force out at 2nd, Pedro Ciriaco came to bat with runners on 1st and 3rd. The infield was brought in and Ciriaco was not jammed enough to bloop a single over the drawn in infield. The 5th double play was turned to end the inning but the damage was done.

Russell Martin, of all people, was the star of the Yankees offense tonight. He got the Yankees offense on the board in the 7th inning with his 12th home run of the season and cut the two-run deficit in half. In the 8th inning, Andruw Jones g0t a double with 2 outs and Russell Martin would come through against former Yankee Alfredo Aceves with a game-tying single to center field on the first pitch he saw. Despite the 5 walks that the Yankees got from starter Felix Doubront, the Yankees could not make the Red Sox lefty pay for them. The Yankees 1-4 hitters managed just one hit in tonight’s game while striking out 6 times. Nick Swisher returned to the starting lineup tonight as the designated hitter and had the only 2 hits off of Doubront until the Martin home run. Ichiro Suzuki continued his 6-game hitting streak since joining the New York Yankees with his infield single in the 7th inning.

Win – Alfredo Aceves (2-6)

Loss – David Robertson (1-4)

Pedro Ciriaco Quickly Evolving Into Yankee Killer With Heroic Performances in Clutch

NEW YORK -- A month ago, Pedro Ciriaco was playing hero in Pawtucket. These days, the stakes are much higher. For the second straight game, the Red Sox utilityman delivered a knockout blow to the Yankees, looping an RBI blooper in the 10th inning to lift the Red Sox to a 3-2 victory and series win on Sunday. The heroics came one day after Ciriaco rifled an RBI triple in the ninth...

Ciriaco comes through for Red Sox again

Infielder Pedro Ciriaco did it again. Ciriaco delivered the game-winning hit Sunday night, a fisted blooper into shallow right field to score Jarrod Saltalamacchia in the 10th inning and give the Red Sox a 3-2 victory over the Yankees. But Ciriaco's presence in the lineup at shortstop had little to do with his recent hot streak or his go-ahead RBI triple in the ninth inning...

Bobby Valentine Has No Plans to Make Pedro Ciriaco A Full-Time Starter, But Hints That His Roster Spot Is Safe

NEW YORK –– Pedro Ciriaco is enjoying a career year. After thriving in Pawtucket, the utility man has been a key contributor to the Red Sox, hitting .356 with seven RBIs and six steals. Ciriaco –– a shortstop by nature –– has especially torched the Yankees this season, going 10-for-18 (.556) with seven runs and five RBIs in four games. He also ripped the go-ahead RBI...

Yankee Killer Pedro Ciriaco Does It Again!

The Red Sox won the game last night in extras to take a much needed series from the Yankees in order to keep any hope of their season alive.  Felix Doubront pitched real well, however the hero from the night was consistent Yankee killer Pedro Ciriaco.  Doubront took the mound for the Sox and he showed that he can pitch against any team and any lineup.  I heard whispers around...

Mr. Robertson, Meet Mr. Ciriaco

Pedro Ciriaco's RBI single off David Robertson in the top of the 10th inning snapped a 2-2 tie, giving the Red Sox a 3-2 win in the rubber game of their weekend series against the Yankees in the Bronx. For Ciriaco it was his 2nd big hit in as many nights against the Yankees.Felix Doubront (pictured) pitched into the 7th inning allowing just 1 run on 4 hits. He walked 5 and...

Red Sox beat Yankees in 10th inning

Pedro Ciriaco blooped an RBI single in the 10th inning for his latest big hit against the New York Yankees, and the Boston Red Sox squeaked out a 3-2 victory Sunday night moments after manager Bobby Valentine was ejected. Felix Doubront held the Yankees scoreless until Russell Martin homered leading off the seventh inning. Martin also hit a tying single with two outs in the eighth...

Adrian Gonzalez, Pedro Ciriaco the Hot Hitters as Red Sox Bring Winning Ways Back to Fenway Park

Editor's note: The temperature gauge is a Bill James-created statistic that measures how hot or cold hitters are. We will spotlight Red Sox and opposing team temperatures on game days. Boston has been waiting all season for that magical turnaround, that burst above .500, that huge winning streak that vaults the Red Sox into real playoff contention. It may actually happen this...

Ciriaco, Red Sox take down Yanks late

RED SOX 3, YANKEES 2 10/F Maybe, just maybe, the Red Sox aren't dead just yet. Two nights in a row the Red Sox lost a lead to the Yankees and fought back to win, taking two out of three this past weekend.  They are still four games out of the second wild card at this point.  With less than 36 hours until the trade deadline, what will this series mean for the Sox front office...

Ciriaco's triple leads Red Sox past Yankees, 8-6

NEW YORK -- Will Middlebrooks emerged from the shower, saw the reporters spilling out of Pedro Ciriaco's locker into his, turned around and headed back to an off-limits area of the visitor's clubhouse at Yankee Stadium. "Pedro's a superstar," Middlebrooks said with a grin. With just 98 big-league at-bats under his belt, Ciriaco isn't quite a superstar...

Red Sox News & Notes - 7/30

Pedro! Pedro! Pedro! Certainly if the Boston Red Sox were playing at home last night instead of Yankee Stadium that would have been the chant going on. And if you're the New York Yankees you probably don't want to see Pedro Ciriaco anytime soon. For the second straight night, Ciriaco delivered the big hit as his bloop single in the 10th gave the Red Sox a 3-2 lead and...

Red Sox 8, Yankees 6

NEW YORK -- Pedro Ciriaco's ninth-inning triple just beyond the reach of Curtis Granderson scored Jacoby Ellsbury with the winning run as the Boston Red Sox edged the New York Yankees 8-6 in front of 49,573 fans Saturday at Yankee Stadium. The Red Sox blew a five-run lead and appeared as if they might be headed for a disastrous defeat when Mark Teixeira tied the game for the...

On Sunday, it was a soft single to right with one out in the 10th inning, giving the Red Sox a 3-2 victory in the Yankees' first extra-inning home game this season. The hit capped...

BP Unfiltered: Ever Wondered What It Would Be Like To Play Center Field? by Matthew Kory

Major League Baseball players are good. Really really good. This isn't a news-flash, but it's something that we sometimes forget. I know I do. "How could you miss that 95 mph fastball?! It was right down the pipe!" Well, Mr. Sitting-On-Your-Butt-Eating-Cheetos (i.e. me), it was 95 mph. That was the first reason. So baseball is hard. We know that, but we tend...

Sunday Red Sox Delight - 7/29

After winning last night 8-6, the Boston Red Sox look to get back to .500 and take the weekend series tonight in the finale of a three-game set with the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. First pitch is scheduled for 8:05 p.m. and will be broadcast nationally on ESPN. You can also watch the game online at or on your mobile device with the WatchESPN app...

Pedro Is Yankees’ Daddy

At this point, the Yankees should just tip their cap to Pedro Ciriaco, who beat them for the second straight night, and is hitting .500 against the Yankees this season (11 for 22). The Red Sox took two of three against the Yankees this weekend, but is this a good thing (the start of the hot streak everyone has been waiting for) or a bad thing (just an illusion that will prevent the...
