Baltimore Orioles 11 — New York Yankees 5

A second inning collapse was the beginning of the end in tonight’s 11-5 loss to the Baltimore Orioles.

A six-pitch 1st inning is usually a good start for Ivan Nova but the run support he received in the 1st inning would be overshadowed when he got to pitch with the lead. The six pitches he used to breeze through the 1st inning was nothing like the seven runs he allowed in the 2nd inning. With a five-run lead, Ivan Nova would surrender a momentum-swinging seven runs, highlighted by a grand slam by Chris Davis. In what was clearly a terrible start by Nova, he lasted just 5 innings with 10 hits and 9 runs as none of his pitches seemed to be sharp and his control was lacking. Relievers Cody Eppley and Clay Rapada would also give up additional runs in their appearances, brought in on a two-run home run off of Rapada by Nick Markakis.

The Yankees offense came out on fire right away. The first four batters reached base, including Robinson Cano snapping his 0 for 13 streak with an outstanding two-run home run in the 1st inning. Two more runs would score in the 1st inning as the five-run 1st inning got every Yankee to get an at-bat in that inning. Unfortunately, the Yankees offense came out with fire but this fire was quickly doused with the relentless offense by the Orioles. The Yankees scattered 5 hits throughout the remaining 8 innings after having 6 in the 1st inning alone. The Baltimore Orioles pitchers settled down and pitched well with the lead as they pushed the Yankees losing streak to 4 games.
