CC Sabathia struggled in his 4th consecutive start, allowing 5 in tonight’s loss. (Photo by Denis Poroy/Getty Images) New York Yankees 2 — San Diego Padres 7   The rough season for CC continued in tonight’s 7-2 loss to the San Diego Padres. Following a July that featured a 1-3 record with a 6.60 ERA, CC Sabathia looked to start moving in the right direction for August. After a pair of singles in the first inning, he would get the first out but would follow with a walk to load the bases. After a borderline 2-2 pitch called a ball, CC Sabathia’s fastball would go wide of the plate and first baseman Yonder Alonso would walk to bring in the first run of the game. Second baseman Jedd Gyorko would bring in another run on a bang-bang play at first thanks to a great play by Robinson Cano. With the Yankees trailing, Ichiro got the second inning started with a single. He would get his 16th stolen base before Eduardo Nunez would bring him home. The run-scoring double by Nunez got the Yankees on the board. Chris Stewart would productively move Nunez to third base when he grounded out to second base. With CC Sabathia at the plate, Nunez needed a great jump on a ball in play. Sabathia grounded out to third base but Nunez got an excellent first step towards home and scored to tie the game on the ground out. In the third inning, the defense helped out Sabathia. Chase Headley hit a double with one out. After the second out of the inning, Yonder Alonso hit a single to center field and Brett Gardner would get Headley out at home with a throw to Chris Stewart. In the fourth inning, CC Sabathia would lose the lead and eventually the game. With one out, CC Sabathia turned to a changeup for a 3-2 pitch and rightfielder Logan Forsythe would go deep. The solo home run put the Padres ahead and they would not give it up. You know it’s going bad when the pitcher gets on base. Andrew Cashner, the starting pitcher, would hit a single on a play that CC Sabathia fell asleep on. He didn’t cover first base on the groundball to Overbay and Cashner reached. Shortstop Everth Cabrera would make the Yankees pay for this. A hit to deep left center field would be a run-scoring triple. Sabathia would not be able to finish the sixth inning. He started the inning with a strikeout but walked the next batter. Everth Cabrera got his fourth hit of the game and Chris Denorfia singled in a run with two outs in the inning. Denorfia was the last batter Sabathia faced. In 5.2 innings, CC Sabathia tied his season-high of 11 hits. He gave up five runs with three walks and four strikeouts. Preston Claiborne would finish off the sixth inning but the rest of the bullpen wouldn’t fare so well. Joba Chamberlain got the seventh inning and Jedd Gyorko hit a home run off of him. In the eighth inning, Adam Warren came in and he gave up a home run to Will Venable. Curtis Granderson made his return to the Yankees tonight. He played left field and was fifth in the order. He went hitless with two strikeouts in four at-bats. CC Sabathia has allowed five or more runs in four straight games for the first time in his career. The struggles with his ineffectiveness are visible and wants to improve like everyone else wants. He’ll continue trying and hopefully the record will begin to reflect it. He will be a tremendous factor in success or failure for this year and years to come.   Win – Andrew Cashner (8-5) Loss – CC Sabathia (9-10)   Notables Yankees *Eduardo Nunez – 1 for 3, R, 2B, RBI (11) *Ichiro Suzuki – 1 for 4, R Padres *Everth Cabrera – 4 for 5, 3B, RBI (29) *Logan Forsythe – 1 for 3, R, BB, Solo Home Run (4) in the 4th, RBI (13)   Current Yankees Record: 56-52   Get your Yankees Tickets from our friends at TiqIQ.
