Found August 10, 2013 on Bronx Pinstripes:
Offensive struggles visible, like in Eduardo Nunez, about the season-long issues. (Photo by Rich Schultz/Getty Images) Detroit Tigers 9 — New York Yankees 3   Hughes wasn’t able to hold down the potent lineup in today’s 9-3 loss to the Detroit Tigers. The Yankees turned to Phil Hughes to carry the momentum of yesterday’s win into today’s game. Unfortunately, the Tigers had the momentum right away. In the first inning, the former Yankee farmhand Austin Jackson got the game going with a leadoff triple. Torii Hunter would bring home Jackson with a sacrifice fly deep enough to put the Tigers ahead. In the third inning, Miguel Cabrera continued with his powerful swing. After tying yesterday’s game, he took an inside fastball off the plate to deep left field for his 35th home run of the season. In the fifth inning, Austin Jackson would continue tormenting his former organization. The center fielder would go deep for his ninth home run of the season. Torii Hunter would hit a single and this would be the last straw for Hughes. Preston Claiborne would come in and try to keep the game where it was. Miguel Cabrera would get a hit and Prince Fielder would strike out. Victor Martinez would hit a double off the left field wall and one run would score. Don Kelly would bloop a single in front of Brett Gardner and two runs would score. Claiborne would finish the inning and Hughes’ line was done. In 4.1 innings, Phil Hughes allowed four runs on seven hits while striking out six. It took 99 pitches for Hughes to get through his start. Inabilities to finish at-bats and get the last strike continues to be a problem that plagues Hughes’ starting pitching career. Claiborne would get one out in the sixth inning before allowing a single and walking Austin Jackson. With extra innings taking its toll on the bullpen, Claiborne exited the game after 34 pitches. With the bullpen a little taxed from the previous two games, Joba Chamberlain would come into the precarious spot. The bad would go worse when Joba Chamberlain hung a slider and Torii Hunter went the other way to right center field. The three-run home run gave the Tigers nine runs and the Yankees offense didn’t have much fight. Through the first three innings, Anibal Sanchez shut down the Yankees. Brett Gardner would get the first hit for the Yankees in the fourth inning. Two would get on with one out but Alfonso Soriano chased out of the zone to strike out and Curtis Granderson would strike out as well. Eduardo Nunez would hit a double to center field to open the fifth inning. Lyle Overbay would hit a two-run home run to right field. His 13th home run of the game put the Yankees on the board but it didn’t catch up much ground on the deficit. Lyle Overbay would bring in the the third run for the Yankees in the ninth inning too. He supplied all the offense today but it was just a fraction of the offense the Tigers brought with them to get back on their winning ways.   Win – Anibal Sanchez (10-7) Loss – Phil Hughes (4-11)   Notables Tigers *Torii Hunter – 3 for 4, 2 R, 3-Run Home Run (13) in the 6th, 4 RBI (60) *Austin Jackson – 2 for 4, 3 R, BB, 3B, Solo Home Run (9) in the 5th, RBI (28) Yankees *Lyle Overbay – 2 for 3, R, BB, 2-Run Home Run (13) in the 5th, 3 RBI (50) *Eduardo Nunez – 1 for 4, R, 2B   Current Yankees Record: 58-57   Get your Yankees Tickets from our friends at TiqIQ.

Mark Cuban goes after Bug Selig for A-Rod suspension

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban was a guest on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno on Thursday and didn’t hold back his opinion of MLB commissioner Bud Selig and his so-called personal vendetta against juiced-up slugger Alex Rodriguez, among other things… “Horrible. I think it’s disgraceful what Major League Baseball is trying to do to him. It’s not that he doesn’t deserve...

Yankees: Walk off weekend feeling

WEEKEND SUMMARY:  Yankees Win (Photo credit: L.Burchfield)  This past weekend the New York Yankees earned their first series win since the All-Star Break. But even better was winning two of three vs. the red-hot Detroit Tigers, who came into the Bronx on a 12-0 streak and with a comfortable seven game lead in the AL Central. The Tigers still hold the best record in the AL at 69...

A-Rod receives mixed reaction from fans in return to Yankee Stadium (Video)

Your browser does not support iframes. New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez played in Yankee Stadium Friday night for the first time this season and received an understandably mixed reaction from the fans. As A-Rod came to the plate, there was about a 50-50 split between fans cheering and booing. However, after A-Rod struck out in his first at-bat, he was nearly...

Yankees injuries may have brought numbers down, but not their heads

It’s evident the Yankees are not having the season the organization and fans hoped for. With 48 games left and the team sporting a 58-57 record, hopes for Yankee baseball in October. They are 10.5 games back in the American League East and 7 games off the second wild card spot. All that is to blame this season are injuries. 17 players have been put on the disabled list this...

Yankees game 114 lineup: 8/9/13

The last time Alex Rodriguez set foot in Yankee Stadium against the Tigers, he was benched in favor of Eric Chavez. Now, he returns nearly a year later – back at third base. It seems as if it’s now or never for the Yankees, who are just one game above .500 coming into tonight’s game. Ivan Nova looks to continue his recent success, facing off against New Jersey native Rick Porcello...

Rivera falters, Gardner proves savior

It was a weird Sunday in Yankeeland, with A-Rod drawing cheers -- not jeers -- from the Bronx faithful, Mariano Rivera looking (again) like a closer who maybe actually should be retiring, and the light-hitting Brett Gardner providing some game-winning pop to save Rivera's bacon for the second time in three days. The day started off with Alex Rodriguez, after a day off, going...

Boo-birds will be out at Yankee Stadium as A-Rod puts the pinstripes back on

He has next to nothing to do with the Yankees’ season being finished by the first week of August. In fact after missing four months recovering from hip surgery and morphing into the face of the Biogenesis scandal he has looked better than expected. Yet tonight at Yankee Stadium a frustrated Yankees fan base likely will greet Alex Rodriguez who makes his Bronx season debut with...

The Yankees are disciplining A-Rod for seeking a second opinion on his quad

It all seems so quaint compared to his 211-game suspension by Major League Baseball but Alex Rodriguez is being disciplined by the Yankees for seeking a second opinion on his strained quad without authorization from the team reports Andrew Marchand of ESPN New York. This arises out of that fun little controversy in July when A-Rod had Dr. Michael Gross examine his MRI and then go...

A-Rod returns to Bronx boobirds

Alex Rodriguez got booed in pregame introductions, booed when his picture was put up on the video board and booed again when came to bat in the first inning. And when he struck out? Booed even more.
