(Photo Credit: Brent Mayne) Boston Red Sox 8 — New York Yankees 2   The regular season is officially under way in today’s 8-2 loss to the Boston Red Sox.   CC Sabathia is the ace of the Yankees pitching staff and got the start today. After a strong first inning that featured two strikeouts, a walk of Jarrod Saltalamacchia started trouble in the second inning. Jonny Gomes singled and rookie outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. walked for his first of three today to load the bases. Shortstop Jose Iglesias hit a ball to the right of shortstop Eduardo Nunez and the speed of Bradley Jr. was too much as a run would score on Nunez’s attempt to get a force at second base. Kevin Youkilis, at first base today, would prevent one run from scoring with a force out at home before Shane Victorino and Dustin Pedroia would succeed with runners on. Victorino brought in two runs and Pedroia brought in one. In the fourth inning, Kevin Youkilis got the Yankees offense going with a double to left field. Vernon Wells would walk and Ichiro Suzuki got a single to load the bases and give the Yankees a good scoring opportunity. Francisco Cervelli got the start today at catcher and came through offensively, bringing in two runs to cut the deficit in half. In five innings, Sabathia gave up four runs on eight hits, four walks, and five strikeouts. Jon Lester bested Sabathia with five innings of two-run baseball on five hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. David Phelps, the fifth starter in the rotation, made a relief appearance in today’s game and faced instant trouble with a leadoff triple by Jacoby Ellsbury in the sixth inning. Three groundouts would help Phelps escape this predicament without adding to the difference. With the Yankees trailing by three in the ninth inning, Joba Chamberlain was called upon and the result seemed awfully similar to the second inning. Jarrod Saltalamacchia would reach on a walk, Jonny Gomes singled to left, and Jackie Bradley Jr. walked again to load the bases with just one out. Jacoby Ellsbury hit a single to right to bring in two runs and Shane Victorino would bring in one more run, increasing their lead to six.   Win – Jon Lester (1-0) Loss – CC Sabathia (0-1)   Notables Red Sox *Jose Iglesias – 3 for 5, R, RBI (1) *Shane Victorino – 2 for 6, 3 RBI (3) Yankees *Francisco Cervelli – 1 for 3, BB, 2 RBI (2) *Kevin Youkilis – 1 for 4, R, 2B   Current Yankees Record: 0-1   Get your Yankees tickets from our friends at TiqIQ

Sabathia's velocity a concern

CC Sabathia's decreased velocity last season, during the spring, and on Opening Day has given reasons for people to be concerned.

C.C. Sabathia not concerned about drop in velocity

Many times a drop in a pitcher's fastball velocity can be indicative of an injury.  Or it can be part of the normal aging process.  Pitcher just can't continue throwing as hard as they used to as they get older.  So what's the reason for C.C. Sabathia's drop in velocity? No one knows for sure, but Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News says Sabathia is not...

Opening Day: AKA Spring Training Game #33

Today started like every other weekday season opener for me: I developed a cough, called out sick, piled on Yankee gear from head to toe, and went to my best friend's house to watch the game. The excitement of the season opener soon gave way to the ambivalence that comes from watching a less than ace pitcher and a bunch of utility players take the field. In other words--a Spring...

Andy Pettitte: 'I expect us to be in the World Series'

Many of the preseason projections have the New York Yankees missing the playoffs this season, but veteran starting pitcher Andy Pettitte believes otherwise.   "I don't let my mind go in that direction because I

Opening Day win for the Red Sox in the Bronx

AL BEast Notebook – April 1 It’s a great start to the season if you are a Red Sox fan. Not so much for their proud counterparts in the Big Apple. CC Sabathia gave up four runs in the second inning on walks and singles and that was all Boston needed as they beat the Yankees 8-2 on a day that started out warm and sunny and ended cold, rainy and windy, with empty bleachers and trash...

Assorted Quick Thoughts on Opening Day No. 2

Sunday was the beginning of the 2013 MLB regular season, and it kicked off with a bang, as the Astros bombed the Rangers and we all learned a lesson about the real value of a one-game playoff. Not like the stakes were the same, so the game was managed differently from how it could’ve been, but in any one given game, a team like the Houston Astros can beat a team unlike the Houston...

Recap: Sox grind out an 8-2 win over the Yankees

We shouldn't get too caught up over one game right? NAHHHHH. CUE THE DUCKBOATS.   162-0 baby! The Red Sox attacked an unusally shaky CC Sabathia and Jon Lester managed to work through a rough inning and let the bullpen come in and do shut down the Yankees and come out with an 8-2 win.  This wasn't a classic Sox victory with the lineup cranking out three or four homers...
