David Phelps takes the mound for the Yankees tonight (Photo courtesy of nydailynews.com)
David Phelps is trying to stop a 2 game losing streak for the Yankees tonight as they play the second game of a three game set in Coors Field against the Colorado Rockies. Phelps is making his second start of the season and enters the game with a 1-1 record, a 5.56 ERA, and a 1.50 WHIP in 22.2 innings of work. He does, however, have 27 strikeouts, so look for his ability to get swings and misses to help him work out of jams. Phelps will have his work cut out for him though, as the Rockies have been an offensive juggernaut to begin this season. The Rockies are in the top 2 in the majors in: runs, hits, triples, home runs, total bases, batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, and OPS. That is impressive and something to keep in mind for tonight’s game. On the bump for the Rockies is Juan Nicasio, who is 3-0 with a 4.91 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP. In 29.1 innings, Nicasio has surrendered a whopping 6 home runs already and has issued 15 walks. The Yankees are going to need to stay patient against Nicasio, who has far too many walks to begin the season. Here are the lineups for both teams:
New York Yankees (18-13)
Brett Gardner CF
Robinson Cano 2B
Vernon Wells LF
Lyle Overbay 1B
Ichiro Suzuki RF
Jayson Nix SS
Chris Nelson 3B

Austin Romine C
Starting for NYY: RHP David Phelps (1-1, 5.56 ERA)
Colorado Rockies (19-13)
Dexter Fowler CF
Josh Rutledge 2B

Todd Helton 1B

THAT'S NOT VERY NICE
Your browser does not support iframes.Thursday was a milestone day for Yankees second basemen Robinson Cano.Cano legged out an infield single in the third inning to record his 1,500th career hit. In customary fashion, the ball he hit to notch the milestone was removed from play and rolled into the Yankees dugout for a keepsake souvenir. Now, usually these balls are considered sacred...
There is do doubt that this 18-month-old who is referred to as ‘C.C’ knows more than I do about some of the Yankees’ greats. In a very impressive feat, C.C. is able to rattle off some of the best to ever don the pinstripes, and their jersey numbers. Don’t act like you aren’t impressed. New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi is batting starting pitcher David Phelps eighth in their lineup Wednesday night instead of the more traditional ninth spot in an interleague game against Colorado.
Girardi took the unusual step to help protect his left-handed heavy lineup against a Rockies bullpen filled with left-handed relievers.
The Rockies are starting right-hander Juan...
Have you heard this one?
A man and his wife are walking down a busy city street when they see a giant billboard that reads: 16 Billion and counting….
“National Deficit?” asks the wife.
Her husband replied, “No dummy it is the New York Yankees payroll.”
Ok maybe not that specific joke, but certainly its theme.
My guess is you have heard something like it...
Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda was involved with an odd long ball.
Pineda, who missed all of last season after right shoulder surgery, parked his SUV Wednesday in a grass parking lot behind the left-field fence at the Yankees' minor league complex. After working out, the right-hander got an unexpected surprise. A batting practice homer aided by the wind blowing out went through...
Earlier today, New York Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano collected his 1,500th hit as a member of the organization in the third inning against the Colorado Rockies.
After Cano collected the hit, the ball was sent to the Yankees bench where it was saved to be given to Robinson at a later date.
Before Robinson got back to the Yankees dugout, a couple members of the coaching...
'NOTHING WILL CHANGE'
Mariano Rivera returns to Kaufmann Stadium for the first time since he blew out his knee shagging flies there a little more than a year ago. He'll shag flies again.
Vernon Wells drove in two, scored twice, and played third base in the ninth inning tonight.
New York Yankees 3 – Colorado Rockies 2
Vernon Wells came through in many ways in tonight’s 3-2 win over the Colorado Rockies.
Colorado Rockies pitcher Juan Nicasio got into trouble early in tonight’s game. After a leadoff single by Brett Gardner, the speedy outfielder would steal...
Hope that you are having a good evening. As the baseball season is in full swing, we have been lucky to see a few scuffles this season, however after watching the video below nothing can really compare. While, the era of instantaneous communications, had not yet prevailed this violent confrontation may be hitting your eyes for the first time and you are in for a treat. Over the...
How does a $200 million team have no bench, whatsoever? The next three nights, we may have to see Mariano play SS.Our usual SS, Eduardo Nunez, is listed as day to day. He has a bad rib. That can be really tricky. If Eduardo can't play, it means Jason Nix takes the slot. And it means if he comes up in the late innings, we cannot pinch hit for him. Even Francisco Cervelli - our...
Vernon Wells jacked a two-run home run to deep left field during the top of the first to give the Yankees an early 2-0 lead, but that wasn’t even the most impressive part of the play. A single fan was sitting out in left and smoothly snagged the home run ball in his hat. He casually stood there accepting praise for the grab and brushed a little dirt off of his shoulders in the...
Chelsea supporters on tour with their club in the U.S. will get to watch which team succeeds as Champions League winner.
The Yankees said Thursday they will show the Champions League final between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund on the 59-by-101-foot video board at Yankee Stadium before Chelsea's postseason exhibition against Manchester City at the Bronx ballpark on May...
Pinch-hitter Brennan Boesch hit a tiebreaking infield single with the bases loaded in the ninth off closer Rafael Betancourt and the New York Yankees snapped a five-game skid at Coors Field with a 3-2 win over the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday night.
Vernon Wells had a two-run homer in the first and scored the decisive run when third baseman Nolan Arenado couldn't throw out...
However we feel about Alex Rodriguez, can we agree that yesterday, the man did something nice? He was the lone rehabbing player down in the Tampa clinic - the Yankee Hebrew Home at Riverside-South - to step outside the security fence and sign autographs for fans. He did this for about 30 minutes. It drew reporters the way a melted popsicle attracts ants. Naturally, the brotherhood...
The first thought readers will get after reading this headline is how I am knocking the Yankees. It could not be further from the truth. I am actually giving the team credit for its 18-12 start, something that did not seem possible given the amount of injuries the team has had to deal with. It all started with the Derek Jeter broken ankle in the 2012 postseason and continued with...
