New York Yankees 4 — Tampa Bay Rays 3

Robinson Cano brought in the game-winning run in a patient 8th inning to a 4-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.

The pitching match-up going into today’s game appeared to heavily favor the Tampa Bay Rays as rookie David Phelps took the  mound for the Yankees. The rookie Phelps pitched well in a duel with the Rays ace starter, David Price. In 4.1 innings, Phelps control was a bit erratic at times as he hit 2 batters and walked 3 but he also exhibited pinpoint control with a career-high 8 strikeouts. Phelps gave up just 1 run on 2 hits as he reached 81 pitches and it was his limit as he gave the Yankees an impressive start. Facing left-handed batter Carlos Pena in the 7th inning, Boone Logan would give up Pena’s 13th home run of the season and gave the Rays a solid lead. A patient 8th inning by the Yankees would provide a lead that David Robertson would hold in the 8th and Rafael Soriano would close out with his 19th save of the season.

The Yankees had a terrible time dealing with Rays starter David Price. In 7 innings, the Yankees were held without a hit until Robinson Cano got a single to open the 5th inning. Price would strikeout 8 in his outing and would give up his only run on a solo home run by Mark Teixeira. Former Yankee Kyle Farnsworth took over for the 8th inning and was anything but in control. Getting just one out in the inning, Farnsworth walked 4 Yankees to allow a run and received a quick pull from the mound as he could not get the strike zone. Reliever Jake McGee would face Robinson Cano with the bases loaded and Cano has had a problem hitting with runners in scoring position. Recently, Robinson Cano has had such a hot bat that he would come through in this opportunity and score two runs with a single to give the Yankees the lead and eventual win. This win was very notable as it was the 1st win for the Yankees in their last 10 games at Tropicana Field.

Win – Boone Logan (3-0)

Loss – Kyle Farnsworth (0-1)

Save – Rafael Soriano (19)

*Robinson Cano – 2 for 5, 2 RBI (50)

*Mark Teixeira – 1 for 3, 2 R, Solo Home Run (14) in the 7th, RBI (46)

*Carlos Pena – 1 for 2, R, 2 BB, 2-Run Home Run (13) in the 7th, 2 RBI (36)

*Sean Rodriguez – 1 for 4, RBI (25)
