New York Yankees 4 — Oakland Athletics 5 (12 innings) Coco Crisp’s walk-off single completes a 4-game sweep with today’s 5-4 loss to the Oakland Athletics in 12 innings. CC Sabathia took the mound and pitched 7 innings in which the home run did the most damage. In the 5th inning, Brandon Inge and Kurt Suzuki took the Yankees left-hander deep. Through his 7 innings, he surrendered 3 runs on 6 hits with 1 walk and 6 strikeouts on 98 pitches. David Robertson allowed a single and a steal of second that put the, then, potential tying run to be in scoring position but  Robertson pulled out the Houdini act yet again, striking out Josh Reddick and Yoenis Cespedes, the biggest bats of the Oakland lineup. Rafael Soriano didn’t fare as well when he gave up the game-tying home run to Seth Smith but would eventually finish tne inning despite blowing his second save of the season. David Phelps was called on next to start the 10th inning and through 1.2 innings of work, the Yankees rookie pitcher was perfect including striking out the last 3 batters he faced. Joe Girardi would then begin managing to matchups and removed Phelps and brought in Clay Rapada for two left-handed batters that he would get out. With one out in the 12th inning, Cody Eppley was brought in and after a single and a sacrifice bunt, Coco Crisp hit the game-winning, walk-off single to end the game and the series. The Yankees had an early 3 run lead, highlighted by a two-run double with the bases loaded by Alex Rodriguez. The fourth run came on Curtis Granderson’s 26th home run of the season in the 4th inning. The offense was held relatively silent throughout the rest of the game after Granderson’s home run.  This sweep of the Yankees is the first four-game sweep since the Toronto Blue Jays did so in 2003. This was also the first four-game sweep in which all games were decided by one run. Win – Jerry Blevins (3-0)
Loss – Cody Eppley (0-2) Notable

The Yankees look to right the ship and salvage the opportunity for a split with Oakland today as Phil Hughes takes the mound.  Dewayne Wise starts in right field as Nick Swisher rests after pulling up while running down the first base line.  Swisher injured his hip flexor and claims that the injury is not serious, and shouldn’t keep him out of the lineup long term. Derek Jeter...

New York Yankees Closer Mariano Rivera Considering Retirement After All?

The New York Yankees lost perhaps the most important player to their ball club when the greatest closer in MLB history was lost with a torn ACL while shagging fly balls back in May. But what they feared most may be coming true in terms of just how long they will be without Rivera. While the timeline was wavered, from initially looking like all of the 2012 season, to...

After making his way to the United States and signing with the Mariners...

Yankees Trade for Ichiro in Deal that would have been a Huge Story 4 Years Ago

The New York Yankees traded two pitching prospects for an outfielder hitting below the league average in Ichiro Suzuki. Ichiro is in the final year of his contract worth $90 million, and asked to be traded. The Yankees took the bait. This easily ranks as the biggest block buster trade of 2012, in that Ichiro has spent his entire career in Seattle and it will be hard for Mariners...

According to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, the New York Yankees may be interested in trading with the Kansas City Royals to acquire Gold Glove left-fielder Alex Gordon. Yankees trading for Ichiro Suzuki is alarming

I learned of the Ichiro Suzuki trade made by the New York Yankees from my Starbucksguy who informed me as he was making my double, tall skim latte. Seattle Mariners right fielder Ichiro Suzuki (51) (Photo credit: Keith Allison) At first, I accused the poor guy of lying and actually said, “that is not even funny.” Well that explains why he wasn’t laughing. Honestly, I am in...

Podcast Episode 15: No A's For Effort

In the hopes of being able to talk about something positive, I waited until the end of yesterday's series finale in Oakland to complete this episode of the podcast. Of course, that positive news never came. The show is hopeful to some extent, as I interviewed my guest, Mike Pinto of "Mike's Entertainment and Sports Show," before the game began. Topics include Brett...
