The Yankees have been talking an awful lot about budgets in the past couple of offseasons and apparently they aren’t just talking the talk as they have the team’s lowest budget since 2007, according to Bob Nightengale of The USA Today.
The Yankees payroll comes in at 197.9 million by Nightengale’s numbers. That number counts for all of the players on the 25-man roster and everyone on the Major League DL and it isn’t the total that gets counted for the luxury tax. The final luxury tax number is actually each players average annual value, plus benefits, plus $11 million to A.J. Burnett.
The reason the Yankees have been trying to rein in spending is because they are trying to get to $189 million by 2014 when the new collective bargaining agreement increases penalties for going over the luxury tax threshold. Once they get Burnett’s contract off the books, they don’t need to shave off much more, but the catch is that they can’t add payroll.
