The Yankees have been talking an awful lot about budgets in the past couple of offseasons and apparently they aren’t just talking the talk as they have the team’s lowest budget since 2007, according to Bob Nightengale of The USA Today.

The Yankees payroll comes in at 197.9 million by Nightengale’s numbers. That number counts for all of the players on the 25-man roster and everyone on the Major League DL and it isn’t the total that gets counted for the luxury tax. The final luxury tax number is actually each players average annual value, plus benefits, plus $11 million to A.J. Burnett.

The reason the Yankees have been trying to rein in spending is because they are trying to get to $189 million by 2014 when the new collective bargaining agreement increases penalties for going over the luxury tax threshold. Once they get Burnett’s contract off the books, they don’t need to shave off much more, but the catch is that they can’t add payroll.

Cervelli would still start if Martin gets hurt

Despite the fact that the Yankees compare Chris Stewart to Jose Molina defensively, it doesn’t seem like they think he’s good enough all-around to be a starting catcher. Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Yankees manager Joe Girardi said that Francisco Cervelli, not Stewart, would play the bulk of the games if Russell Martin got hurt. “I think (Cervelli) would play the...

Yankees play with Harlem Globetrotters

CC Sabathia’s appearance at a Harlem Globetrotters game could have been some foreshadowing for his disappointing opening day start. During a break in their preseason schedule, New York Yankees CC Sabathia, Curtis Granderson, and Nick Swisher participated in a Harlem Globetrotter’s showcase. CC struggled with this version of baseball, as one of the Globetrotters launched...

The Yankees Beat: Opening Day, Mo, and Pineda

It was Opening Day for most of baseball today, but unfortunately not the Yankees. For that we’ll have to wait until Friday at 3. Here is what the blogosphere was talking about today. The Captain’s Blog asks, if the Yankees aren’t playing, does opening day make a sound? I think it sounds kind of like the Red Sox bullpen imploding. The Greedy Pinstripes takes a look at...

Do the Yankees Finally Have a Rotation Built to Contend?

Andy Pettitte dashed out of the Yankees’ dugout to a standing ovation, then pitched a scoreless sixth inning on Wednesday, appearing in his first game since the 2010 American League Championship Series. The 39-year-old left-hander turned in a solid 13-pitch outing in the Yankees’ Grapefruit League finale, an 8-3 win over the Mets at George M. Steinbrenner Field, permitting...

BBDP April 6, 2012: Dellin Dealin’, Campos Cruisin’

Triple-A Empire State vs. Lehigh Valley. L 5-6. L: Venditte (0-1) Brandon Laird: 1/4, RBI (.143) Colin Curtis: 1/4, K (.143) Francisco Cervelli: 0/4 (.000). I’m worried he might have taken this demotion really hard. Dellin Betances: 5 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, BB, 6 K (3.6 ERA). Excellent outing. The lack of walks is encouraging, and so are the abundance of strikeouts. Pat “Sideshow”...

Yankees P Pettitte tosses 45 pitches in bullpen session

New York Yankees lefthander Andy Pettitte threw 45 pitches in a bullpen session Friday morning. Pettitte, who came out of retirement and signed a one-year contract with New York, is expected to pitch Monday, most likely in an extended spring training game. The Yankees are hoping that Pettitte, who will turn 40 in June, will be ready to join the starting rotation by May. Pettitte...

Rivera has rare blown save, Rays beat Yankees

Mariano Rivera took the blame for a rare blown save. Carlos Pena hit an early grand slam off CC Sabathia, then completed a ninth-inning comeback with an RBI single off the New York closer that lifted the Tampa Bay Rays to a season-opening 7-6 victory over the Yankees on Friday. ''My fault,'' Rivera said. ''I felt good. I don't make excuses. I just left...

Yankees claim righty Cody Eppley off waivers

It didn’t take long for the Yankees to replace George Kontos, who was traded for catcher Chris Stewart on Wedneday, in the Triple-A bullpen as they signed righty Cody Eppley for the role, according to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. “He gets right-handers out,” Cashman told Hoch. “Obviously, we’ve had a number of things happen. [David] Phelps is obviously up here. We just traded...

25 Yankees, 25 Questions

Opening Day is a time for celebration, a time for joy and good feelings.  It is also a time to evaluate the state of your team (and possibly overreact to an Opening Day loss).  But hey, that’s the fun of it.  Let’s take a look at the entire 2012 Yankees roster and answer the hard-hitting questions everyone wants to know: Infielders 1: Will Teixeira hit .281 this season? ...

The Return of the And-i

Money, money, and more money: the typical offseason that New York Yankee fans are accustomed to. The Yankees shop for high profile free agents like the Kardashian sisters shop for men. From CC Sabathia to Carl Pavano to Russell Martin, Yankee free agent signings are boom or bust. They produce World Series MVPs or major disappointments. If the Bronx Bombers can’t beat you in...

The Importance of April for the Pittsburgh Pirates

The Major League Baseball season is a long one - six months and 162 games. That fact lessens the impact of each individual game. You don't see teams getting too upset over losing a game, or even losing two or three in a row. Teams can have bad months and not be out of the race, they just have to bounce back and make up for the bad month with a good month. Most teams don't...

Burnett made a rehab start in Bradenton yesterday and looked pretty good, going 4.2 innings with five strikeouts while allowing a run on two hits. Tim Williams was there and wrote about the start here.I stumbled across this humorous article that brings back the name Dmitri...
