The Yankees' first complete game of the season bested the Detroit Tigers' Justin Verlander, but it didn't come from ace pitcher CC Sabathia. Phil Hughes threw a four-hitter as the Yankees prevailed 5-1 at Comerica Park. It was a great "bounce-back win," manager Joe Girardi said after Hughes gave up a season-high seven runs in 5 1/3 innings last Monday against the Angels in Anaheim. In that one, as in many of Hughes' starts, he was undone by mistakes over the plate and getting into hitter's counts. On Sunday he worked quickly and put out potential threats with ease. On five occasions, he allowed a two-out base runner only to retire the next hitter. "I was able to put out any little fires that started (and) ultimately I was able to keep my pitch count down and get some quick outs," Hughes said. "It all kind of accumulates to be able to go out and do what CC does. That's a good feeling." Derek Jeter hit the game's first p...

Yankees 2012 1st round draft pick: Ty Hensley
With their first pick in the 2012 1st-year player draft, the Yankees selected right handed pitcher Ty Hensley out of Edmond Santa Fe High School in Oklahoma with the 30th overall pick.
Hensley is big and projectable at 6-foot-4, 220-pounds who has been compared to Phil Hughes physically. His fastball sits at 93-94 mph with his fastball and occasionally touches 98 with it. He has...

Hughes outduels Verlander for 1st 9 inning complete game
When glancing at the matchups earlier in the week Justin Verlander vs. Phil Hughes stood out. Not in a good way though, Verlander the best pitcher in the game and Hughes just came off one of his worst outings of the season against the Angels. What chance did the Yankees have?
It might not have looked good on paper, but perhaps Hughes has turned a corner in his career because...
Hughes outpitches Verlander in leading Yankees past Tigers
By Richard L. Shook DETROIT -- Justin Verlander may have the hardware, but on Sunday, Phil Hughes had the stuff. Hughes bested the Detroit Tigers' Cy Young/MVP Award winner with his first complete game this year and second of his career while New York backed him with a two-home run attack in a 5-1 victory by the Yankees. His fastball was crisp, he moved it around and by...
MLB Notes
Over his last six starts, Phil Hughes has a 3.60 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP. He was bombed during one outing, allowing seven runs to the Angels but gave up three runs or fewer in the other five games. Hughes has allowed at least one home run in all of his 11 starts this season, and while he’s been a bit unlucky with his HR/FB rate, as a right-hander who calls Yankee Stadium home, long...
Podcast Episode 9: Road Warriors
The Yankees just finished their longest road trip of the season, going 6-3 in games against Oakland, Anaheim and Detroit. Most of this episode of the podcast was recorded after yesterday's final game of the trip, a 5-1 victory over Detroit, in which Phil Hughes notched his first-ever 9-inning complete game. Before the game I talked Yankees with Chris Carelli of Yanks Go Yard...
Upon Further Review: Thank God the Yankees didn’t trade Phil Hughes for Johan Santana
Wait a minute. This is getting confusing.
Hughes Rewarding Patience
The Yankees were a distant second in the news this weekend. Imagine that, the Mets dwarfing their big brother. It’s important to note, however, yesterday’s pitching performance by Phil Hughes
Hughes beat Justin Verlander 5-1, but even more impressive was the fact he threw 123 pitches and a complete game- the first nine-inning CG of his career. At the end of April, Hughes had...
Game Picks - Monday: June 4, 2012
Sunday was a pretty good day for the picks. It was hard to believe that the star pitcher in the
Tigers - Yankees game was Phil Hughes and not Justin Verlander. The observation was
made earlier on Twitter that every time the picks have used the word, "mismatch," this
season, the pick has been wrong. So the new rule should be that whenever the brain thinks
that word,...
Yankees 5, Tigers 1
Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez each homered off Justin Verlander, and Phil Hughes pitched a four-hitter to lead the New York Yankees to a 5-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday.
Jeter homered on the first pitch of the game, and Rodriguez hit a long solo shot in the third inning. Hughes (5-5) didn't need much support in throwing his first career complete game of nine innings...
