At least financially? As just about every team but the Yomiuri Giants has been associated with signing Josh Hamilton, the Yankees name finally surfaced. USA Today’s Bob Nightengale tweeted:
@BNightengale The #Yankees, but not GM Brian Cashman, quietly running background check on Josh Hamilton, rival GM says.
The background check might turn up some issues with substance abuse and perhaps rehab, so I’m not sure what that’s about, but it can only make sense that a team that batted .157 in the ALCS sweep at the hands of the Tigers would be interested in a corner outfield bat. Of course, Hamilton himself wasn’t exactly clutch down the stretch (that might be what the background check turned up) as he seemed both mentally and physically fatigued as the Rangers coughed up the AL West title to the A’s, then beat by the Orioles in the Wild Card showdown (Hamilton 0-4, 2 K’s). To the point where Hamilton was routinely booed by the same fans that watched him take the Rangers to the World Series 2 years in a row.
The major question around the league is “what is Josh Hamilton worth”. In stretches, he is easily the best player in the game. At other times, he physically wears down and can seem as if he doesn’t care with his somewhat aloof outward personality. Another major question is, how would he fare in Gotham? My guess is “not too well”. But the Yankees have been quiet and have some money to spend, might be a match made in heaven!
