Yankees Prospect Tossing Shutout Innings in Minors

The scoreless inning streak of New York Yankees pitching prospect Drew Thorpe continued last weekend at High Class-A Hudson Valley.

Against Rome on Saturday, Thorpe threw six shutout innings, giving up three hits and two walks while striking out eight. The Renegades won the game, 10-1.

Thorpe hasn’t given up a run in the month of June. In his three starts he’s thrown 21 innings, allowing nine hits. He’s struck out 27 and walked four.

He’s also won his last four starts, dating back to May 28 against Wilmington. Thorpe threw 5.2 innings and gave up four runs.

Thorpe is in his first professional season and he’s turned into one of the top pitchers in the organization. He’s already the No. 6 prospect, per MLB.com, and the Yankees’ highest-ranked pitching prospect.

But he’s part of a quartet of pitching prospects that are in the Top 10 in the organization, including Will Warren (Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre), Richard Fitts (Double-A Somerset) and Yoendrys Gómez (Somerset).

Thorpe is 6-1 with a 2.64 ERA in 11 starts in 2023. He’s struck out 79, walked 22 and allowed batters to hit .222 against him. Going into this week’s action Thorpe leads the South Atlantic League in victories and is second in strikeouts.

The Yankees drafted Thorpe in the second round of last year’s MLB Draft out of Cal Poly. After three college seasons — the last of which he went 10-1 and was named Big West Conference Pitcher of the Year — the Yankees gave his arm a rest after his draft selection.
