The Yankees made the decision last night to release Jack Cust, Colin Curtis, and Ray Kruml from their Triple-A affiliate in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The move came as a surprise, at least in regards to Cust, who could have been considered as Scranton/Wilkes-Barre’s best hitter this season. Cust, 33, was hitting .249 while leading the team with 20 home runs and 66 RBI. The release of Cust from Scranton makes way for outfield prospect Melky Mesa.
Mesa, 25, hit .277 with 14 home runs and 46 RBI through 88 games with Double-A Trenton this season. He tends to strike out a lot, but is one of the Yankees better defensive outfielders in the system. If he hits in the last month of the season with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, we could see him as a reserve in the Bronx in September.
Curtis and Kruml were both on Scranton/Wilkes-Barre’s disabled list.
