The Yankees made a couple of minor moves this morning as they released LHP Neal Cotts and signed RHP Fernando Hernandez.
Cotts, 31 in March, was one of the few lefties that the Yankees signed to try out in camp. Unfortunately he hasn’t gotten past the injuries he’s dealt with in the past as he failed his physical that he took Monday so they cut him.
Hernandez, 26, is a former 49th round draft pick by the Chicago White Sox. He was most recently with the Oakland Athletics organization. He’s played parts of eight seasons in the minors putting up a combined 3.40 ERA over 497 innings. He boasts a decent K/9 of 8.7 and a BB/9 of 3.5. Maybe the Yankees will catch something here, but realistically he is minor league fodder that will probably only get a chance if there are a run of injuries.
