The New York Yankees have already brought in two right-handed hitting outfielders this off-season to fill the void left by Andruw Jones, and they are reportedly looking into bringing in a third. Earlier on Tuesday, ESPN’s Andrew Marchand reported that the Yankees are interested in trying to acquire 1B/OF Michael Morse. With newly re-signed 1B Adam LaRoche in the fold and Jayson Werth, Bryce Harper and Denard Span in the outfield, the Nationals no longer have a regular slot for Morse, who is set to make $7 million this season.
If acquired, Morse could fill a major hole for the Yankees, serving as Ichiro Suzuki’s platoon partner, Mark Teixeira’s back-up, and a potential option at designated hitter – at least until Alex Rodriguez’s return in June. Morse produced a .291/.321/.470 line in 102 games with the Nationals last season. Over the course of his career, Morse has destroyed left-handed pitching to the tune of .303/.357/.503.
In return for Morse, the Nationals are reportedly searching for a left-handed reliever and/or, which creates the impression that a Boone Logan-for-Morse swap could be on the table.
