The Yankees signed right handed reliever Cory Wade to a minor league contract Monday and promoted him to the major leagues on Wednesday night, according to Bryan Hoch and Matt Fortuna of MLB.com.
Kevin Whelan was demoted to Triple-A to make room for Wade on the active roster and Rafael Soriano was moved to the 60-day DL to make room for him on the 40-man roster.
Wade, 28, was released by the Rays after he put up a 1.23 ERA in 21 games for their Triple-A affiliate. In eight seasons in the minor leagues Wade has a 4.16 ERA, a 8.1 K/9 and a 2.0 BB/9. He played in the majors for the Dodgers from 2008 through 2009. IN 82 appearances and 99 innings over that time he had a 3.18 ERA, a 6.3 K/9, and a 2.3 BB/9.
Wade is another arm that will have an opportunity to grab innings at the major league level with Soriano, Joba Chamberlain, and Pedro Feliciano all on the DL.
