Some things are better left unsaid. If you don’t think so, ask Yankee legend Reggie Jackson. ESPN’s Buster Olney is reporting that the New York Yankees have asked Jackson to stay away from team events, in light of his comments made to Sports Illustrated, saying that the numbers of third baseman Alex Rodriguez should “be in question,” due to his admittance to using performance enhancing drugs. “Al’s a very good friend…. But I think there are real questions about his numbers. As much as I like him, what he admitted about his usage does cloud some of his records” Jackson told SI.
While I don’t think Mr. Jackson has anything personal against Rodriguez, I do think he’s just speaking his mind. Stating the sentiments of many former legends of baseball, who’s career achievements are not “in question.” Jackson has since apologized for these comments.
The Yankees seem to think he should of kept his comments to himself, but I think it’s kind of a drastic move to have Jackson stay away from the team. A-Rod had admitted and owned up to his mistakes, so Jackson’s comments can’t possibly make the organization look bad. I don’t get it.
Rodriguez’s numbers have been on the decline in recent years…. This season in particular, with a batting average of .269, 13 homeruns and 38 RBI’s. These numbers for a first half of a season aren’t bad at all, but compared to A Rod’s standards, and the salary he’s making this season ($30,000,000), it’s below average.
In any event, performance enhancing drugs continue to be a problem in baseball. And I can promise you former players will continue to be asked about this problem. Should every team ban an employee who is a former player for their comments on this topic?? I think the teams problem is with the media rather than the former player.
