The AL East leading Tampa Bay Rays (31-23) are in town to face the third place New York Yankees(29-24) in a three-game set with the division at stake. Rays James Shields - Yankee Stadium - 09-21-2011 Tonight, the Rays send James Shields to the hill against the Yankees southpaw Andy Pettitte. SHIELDS vs. PETTITTE Shields, is 0-1, with an ERA of 7.36 in his two starts this season against the Yankees. Shields threw a combined 11 innings, allowing nine earned runs, three homers, while walking six, and fanning seven Bombers. Yankees Robinson Cano has been trouble for Shields, but I am more interested to see how Mark Teixeira does because of his low success against the 30-year old righty. Since Pettitte took 2011 off, he has not faced the Rays since 2010, but his numbers are not any better than Shields. Pettitte made two starts vs. Tampa Bay and posts a 0-1 record, giving up nine earned runs, four homers, with six strikeouts and five walks. Pettitte has to watch out for switch-hitting Be...

Forget Vintage Pettitte, This Is A Whole NEW Pettitte

Associated Press PhotoHe did it again. Andy Pettitte went 7.1 innings last night, giving up 2 singles and 2 walks, while striking out 10, en route to the Yankees 7-0 win over the Rays at Yankee Stadium.I keep hearing the phrase "vintage Pettitte." Vintage? Vintage Andy Pettitte always pitched to contact, scattering a lot of hits during each of his outings, and striking...

The Battle in the AL East

As expected, with one third of the Major League Baseball season in the books, the AL East is the best league in the bigs. What wasn’t expected was the emergency of the Orioles and how they’ve turned their division into a 5 team battle. The Orioles have been on a bit of a skid lately, loosing 7 of their last 10, but they’re heading in the right direction after beating the Red...

Pettitte, Martin lead Yankees to 7-0 victory over Rays

NEW YORK -- Andy Pettitte has galvanized his New York Yankees teammates by turning back the clock and authoring some of the finest performances of his career in the five starts since he returned from a year-long retirement. But neither Pettitte nor his manager is surprised he picked up right where he left off in 2010. Pettitte allowed just two hits in 7 1/3 shutout innings Tuesday...

Yankees vs. Rays: Bombers want to get back on top

AL EAST The last time the New York Yankees were in first-place in the AL East was back on April 24th, but thanks to the 10-strikeout, 7 1/3 innings performance by veteran southpaw Andy Pettitte, the Bombers now stand within striking distance. At just a half-game back from their current opponents, the AL East leading Tampa Bay Rays, who also share the top spot with the Baltimore...

Rays-Yankees Preview

The Tampa Bay Rays head to Yankee Stadium in first place, but they may not feel too confident about their chances in Tuesday night's opener of a three-game set. James Shields has dropped each of his last four outings in the Bronx as he matches up with Andy Pettitte and the New York Yankees. Tampa Bay (31-23) won 8-4 at home over Baltimore on Sunday to take two of three and...

Pettitte Smites The Rays Like They Still Got Devil In Their Name

Andy Pettitte managed to shut out the Rays yesterday for 7 1/3 IP with only 4 baserunners and 10 Ks.  No wonder why he returned.  He was probably sick of beating his kids at MLB 2K12.  “Dad, we don’t mind you playing our video games while we’re at school, but could you stop spitting tobacco onto our all-terrain robot?”  That’s Andy’s kids after a powwow about how...

Yankees 7, Rays 0

NEW YORK -- Andy Pettitte allowed just two hits in 7 1/3 shutout innings in his fifth start since returning from retirement, and Russell Martin had three hits, including a grand slam in the fourth inning that blew open a close game, as the New York Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Rays, 7-0, in front of 40,537 at Yankee Stadium Tuesday. With the win in the opener of the three-game...

Not-So-Rapid Reaction: Yankees 7. Rays 0

It’s a baseball axiom that “real” pitchers learn to adapt to their diminishing stuff and maintain their excellence through mastery of the craft’s fundamentals. Generally, such hurlers tend to see lower strikeout totals, but that goes along with improved control. Basically, they try to become Greg Maddux. Andy Pettitte has come out of retirement this season and turned into...

Rays shut out in Bronx by Yankees

NEW YORK (AP) -- Russell Martin hit a grand slam to help stop the Yankees' struggles with the bases loaded and Andy Pettitte was dominant again at home, leading New York to a 7-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday night. Nick Swisher hit an RBI double after Raul Ibanez was walked intentionally and the Yankees treated Rays starter James Shields to another drubbing in...

James Shields is not as good as last season

After watching James Shields pitch for the Tampa Bay Rays last night against the Yankees, something seemed wrong with the pitcher. At no point last year did Shields seem to be so vulnerable. But then again, last year was such an improvement over what Shields did in 2009 and 2010, is this just Shields reverting to form after a career season or just a bad stretch? He is 6-4, which...
