According to Wallace Mathews of ESPNNewYork.com, the Yankees may turn their attention to former Met rightfielder if they decline to pick up Nick Swisher’s option for this coming season:

Not long ago, it was considered a slam-dunk that the Yankees would pick up Nick Swisher’s $10.25 million option for 2012, despite another miserable postseason performance.

Now, it’s not so clear.

The reason? Carlos Beltran, a free agent after seven up-and-down, and mostly down, seasons with the Mets. Beltran is being shopped hard by his agent, Scott Boras, and his name came up in discussions at the Yankees organizational meeting in Tampa on Wednesday.

“He’s on our list,” said a team official who was present at the meeting. “But we have to make a decision on Swisher first.’

Wallace goes on to explain how different scenarios may play out this offseason for the Yanks and where Beltran would or would not fit into each:

Now, it seems as if the Yankees front office is weighing one of three options — pick up Swisher and forget Beltran, sign Beltran and forget Swisher, or sign Beltran, pick up Swisher’s option and include him in a trade for a starting pitcher.

Two factors, however, work in Swisher’s favor: His age (31 on Nov. 25; Beltran will turn 35 next April), and Beltran’s injury history. Although he played in 142 games in 2011 between the Mets and San Francisco Giants, Beltran has not played a full season since 2008.”

Wow, so in addition to a rumor about the Phillies being interest in pursuing David Wright (click here to read) there comes news that the Yankees might be kicking the tires on bringing Carlos Beltran to the Bronx.  I don’t know what to say except someone punch me in the face and get it over with already!  Honestly I can see where the fit would be for the Yanks and Beltran, who could split time between DH and the outfield and might be willing to do it on a short term deal if the money were right.

With that being said, I have to think the Giants felt pretty good about bringing Carlos back beyond 2011 when they handed Sandy Alderson and the Mets their top pitching prospect, Zack Wheeler, in return for a few months of Beltran’s services.

Earlier in the month Beltran’s agent, Scott Boras, said he believed that his all-star client would certainly consider returning to San Francisco:

Well, you have to remember when Carlos and I sat down to determine what teams he was going to go to, it was his choice.”

“He came to the Giants for a reason. Obviously he has played very well here. He has gotten a chance to get to know the city and the organization.”
