The name on everyone’s lips right now is Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Yaisel Puig. He has put together one of the greatest starts we’ve ever seen to a career, at least in his first month and half of action. He’s tapered off a bit now that there is some extra scouting of him facing Major League pitching, but one thing we cannot take away from him is his amazing hustle. Or cluelessness. He’s already smashed into the right field wall at Dodger Stadium when making a catch, and his baserunning isn’t much better. Last night, during the Dodgers 6-1 victory over the Diamondbacks, Puig attempted to plate himself for some unknown reason and he was dead to rights. This was just stupid baserunning by Puig. The cutoff man already had the ball in shallow centerfield, essentially ending the play. The third base coach certainly wasn’t sending him. It wasn’t great hustle, it was a dumb baseball play. I also liked Miguel Montero wagging his finger at the end. He should have. Dikembe Mutombo may be seeking royalties, though. Bryce Harper was criticized earlier in the year for his ‘hustle’ by many fans and those in baseball media when he crashed into the wall at Dodger Stadium, leaving him with a cut and what wasn’t officially reported as a concussion.
