When the San Diego Padres traded Mat Latos to the Cincinnati Reds, they got a haul of prospects in return that included studs Yonder Alonso and Yasmani Grandal. Alonso is having a very solid rookie season already and Grandal made his debut as a starter Saturday night in Colorado. To say it was a memorable evening would be an understatement.

Grandal collected his first two major league hits on the night, and both left the ballpark. On top of that, he hit each home run from a different side of the plate. That made him the first player in major league history whose first two hits were home runs from different sides of that plate.

Good luck living up to that first game kid.

In the top of the fourth with one out, Grandal walked up to the plate batting right handed against Rockies starter Christian Friedrich. He proceeded to launch a 1-0 pitch out of the park to dead center.

Then in the top of the sixth inning with the Padres trailing 2-1, Grandal stepped into the box batting left handed against Jeremy Guthrie. With Carlos Quentin on first base, Grandal hit a 1-0 pitch down the left field line that got out. It was an absolute laser.

The home runs helped the Padres to an 8-4 win.

Grandal will now likely be the Padres starting catcher with incumbent Nick Hundley now working on his swing in Triple-A. So he will have a serious chance to show what he can do. He is regarded as one of San Diego’s top prospects and now will have a long audition behind the plate.

If he can continue playing like this he’ll never lose his job.
